Sam Vimes achieves wonders through his efforts to be home every night at six to read a book to Young Sam, and a dwarf minister named Grag Bashfulsson does some great cleverness and badly needs to be slashed with someone or other, and I actually cried a little when they finally found the Koom Valley Cube and listened to what it had to say about what really happened in the battle. (Summary: The dwarves and the trolls had a great historic battle at Koom Valley, and deep-underground city dwarves seem to be trying to create another one.)

The 2007 entry into the China Bayles mystery series. It contains the usual mix of herbal lore, recipes, and murder involving Texas lawyer turned herbalist China Bayles and friends. Plot line includes the continuing saga of China's family which has been developing over several novels as a secondary plot issue. In this novel, China's newly discovered half brother appears continuing his investigation into the death of China's and his father 16 years earlier that was ruled an accident, but her half brother, Miles Danforth, believes otherwise and hires China's PI husband, Mike, to investigate the accident. Another enjoyable Texas hill country mystery by Albert.

Read it in college and again in 2006-2007. Required reading for graphic designers.
A fantastic book dealing with racial prejudice in the deep South. Each chapter is told from one of the main characters point of view. The vernacular is spot-on for that era. Mudbound is very engrossing; I couldn't put it down. It's a powerful novel that you won't soon forget.

** spoiler alert ** So, I really like Husseini's writing style. . .the book was an easy and fairly quick read, although some parts were really difficult to swallow. There were just so many awful things that happen to Hassan and his father. . . and Amir for that matter, that you had to wonder if people really suck that much. If they do, I hope that none of us ever have to encounter that kind of evil in our lives. The most frustrating thing about the story for me, which I've been told is completely in my head and probably a result of my own biases - is that it seemed to me that every single Sunni character in this book was fatally flawed with bad character, immorality or indifference. They were secular, self-righteous and without any real redeeming qualities. Only when finally forced into making the "right" decision did they step up. Meanwhile, Hassan and his father and the other Hazarah Shia'a characters were pious, loving, devoted and loyal, but perpetually victimized. It was awful to see what they had to live with on a day to day basis and the tests they were put to - and never wavering in morality. I dunno. . .I guess just wish the two groups weren't portrayed in such a polarized light. . .as a practicing Sunni Muslim, with many Shia'a friends, I can't begin to comprehend the actions that the Sunni characters in the book performed. The irony is that I think Husseini wrote this as a semi-autobiographical piece. . .which means that his experiences would have mirrored Amir's. . .and that probably means that he was surrounded by people capable of these actions. If this was a reader's first exposure to Islam they would also sympathize completely with the Hazarah group and assume that all Sunni Muslims behaved in the way the people in this book did. The reality is that there are good and bad, pious and secular folks in both groups. . .just like with any faith or culture. I'm sure that was true in Afghanistan during the 60s-80s as well. . but you wouldn't know it from reading this book. Other than that, I finished the book pretty fast and enjoyed being swept up into the story. My Afghan Shia'a room-mate is starting it now so i'm really curious to see what she thinks when she's done...

The first book, chronologically, in the Horatio Hornblower series. This took me a very long time to read because of school constraints, but I still enjoyed this. I didn't understand all the nautical language and because of that, some scenes were a little confusing. I'm sure I would have enjoyed this much better if I had read this over a shorter period of time. I'm definitely going to be reading the rest of the series.

Interesting story about the first woman detective on the New York Police Department and how difficult it was to become that. It was a time of corruption on the force. Her husband had been a "roundsman" - I never was sure what that was. After he died, she got hired as a matron - escorting female prisoners, etc. Until the day came when they needed a woman to go undercover. And she knew how to blend. It is pretty short and apparently some reviewers took exception to the shortness of it.
Quoting another reviewer "Madeline": "Fascinating subject matter, truly terrible writing! It read, at times, like a lousy bodice-ripper romance novel! There were passafes that made me cringe and gag over the dialogue and the descriptions of the love scenes. For something written by a female author, I was startled at how shallow the explorations were into the possible thoughts and feelings of the female characters. It was just bad! However, I did enjoy the descriptions of how the tapestries were made, and I eventually got to the end of the story." I agree. There were many times where I was shaking my head wondering how this book received so many good reviews. I didn't hate it, but the writing style was indeed much like a soap opera. Not at all what I expected.
** spoiler alert ** I really enjoyed listening to this book. Sometimes it is hard for me to tell if I like the book or the narrator. In this case, I think it was both. Robinson does a nice job of developing her characters by giving us glimpses into their past. I can't say that the ending was wholly satisfying, but it was honest and realistic--and I knew about Della before meeting her!

I don't remember much about this book, only that some parts were so sad they made me cry.
