It's a very slow-moving book, and the plot takes a long time to establish itself and develop, but the writing style and the characters are so engaging that I couldn't put it down once I started in on it. It's a story about magic in England in the 1800s, at a point when magic had ceased being something people did and instead was an academic subject that people studied. Amidst all these "theoretical magicians," a practical magician named Mr. Norrell emerges on the scene and does some snazzy magic that, as a result of a bet, forces all the theoretical magicians in England to cease calling themselves magicians. Mr. Norrell slowly becomes famed throughout England and eventually takes on a student, Jonathan Strange, who has received a prophecy that he and Mr. Norrell will be rivals. They work together for a long time, but eventually the prophecy fulfills itself and the two become the leaders of rival factions of English magic. Somehow this all sounds a lot more dull than it really is when I write it all out. I found the book absolutely wonderful and was completely wrapped up in it. Highly recommended!

Really, really short. Makes you wonder what happens next.

I am excited about this book for two reasons. I won it in a goodreads giveaway (yay, I won something!). And I have wanted to read a Maisie Dobbs novel. I am a little uptight about reading a series in order, I guess this time will be the exception.

I first read this book in middle school and loved it. When it recently appeared on my daughter's sixth grade reading list, I encouraged her to read it. I then decided to read it too. First things first: I'm either a very liberal or very careless dad: take your pick. I'm not sure how many fathers out there encourage there eleven year old daughters to read books with fairly explicit sex scenes, but I'm one of them. I suppose I'll be a little more careful in the future. The story holds up surprisingly well. Of the books I've been reading this month, this has been the one I've been most enthused about returning to and finishing (which, judging from what I have been reading, is less of the compliment I intended it to be).

After months of searching for any one of the seventy or so books in the Detective Mike Shayne series, I finally found one. After reading it, I can gladly say that I would have paid much more than $2 for it. I first heard of the Mike Shayne books after watching the movie "Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang" which was loosely based on Halliday's "Bodies Are Where You Find Them." As you can imagine, I was not very happy that every book in the series is long out of print. Now that I have read one, I will surely be seeking out the entire series. It's your basic hard-boiled detective stuff, but for some reason I liked it much more than your average pulp. I'm not sure what it was, but I do know this: On the cover the name MIKE SHAYNE is bigger than even the title, and after reading the first 3 and a half chapters without a single mention of the the great and famous detective, I was wondering if I had somehow gotten the wrong book in the right cover. Then in the last line of chapter 4 I was smacked with, "Power? This is Michael Shayne. I'm in." So was I, my friends ... So was I.

I did not like this book at all, despite all the wonderful reviews. I found that when I was about half way through it, I didn't care what happened to any of the characters, so I stopped reading it.
Violent and gruesome, "A Congregation of Jackals" is as modern a take on the Western as No Country for Old Men but one that overlays the standard tropes of the genre with a barbarism that seems believable for its mid-19th century setting and that gives readers a sense that the "lawless" West may have been far less romantic than they imagine. The novel is essentially one long draw toward a brutal climax, but characters along the way are exceptionally well crafted -- particularly the womanizing Dickey and the soulless villain Quinlan. Even incidental characters are given depth and an aura of existence beyond the plot. Also admirable is Zahler's portrayals of African-Americans who, despite the racism of the times, were never set-up as simple scenery or "color" for the story, or portrayed as inferior outside of their immediate circumstance. It's a subtle line that the author never crosses and makes Jackals all the more enjoyable. Other novels have been far less deft in their treatment of the racial divide in the Old West. Zahler deserves recognition for his first novel on several levels.

Though Umberto Eco's brilliance is well-known, I could have likely ripped chapters from this novel without hurting the plot at all. Although it was incredibly dense with intrigue, and the characters were delightful, Eco tried to do far too much in the space of one novel. We could not fully determine whether this was a philosophical romp through the middle ages of heretical paranoia, or an intricately devised murder mystery. I wish he had written a novel about each, but made them two separate stories. This had the unfortunate ring of a textbook, since so much information was crammed into its numerable pages.
