This is the first in a series. It's a good light read, and I enjoyed it...but I didn't get hooked on it. I still have yet to read the rest of the series. They are on my "to-read" list, but there are other books that I think I will enjoy more. To me, this book reads like a series of short stories (mysterys) tied together by a central character.

Well written fictional account of Stalin and the many people that were uprooted by him. There are not many stories told of the devastation caused from Stalin; you usually only hear about Hitler. This story was told from a child's point of view. Very moving and great research from the writer!

Alternately heartwarming and heartbreaking. This is Buechner's fourth memoir, and no, that's not too much in light of his 80 or so years, life experiences, and body of work. He touches on so many subjects -- his friendship with the late poet James Merrill, his family tragedy, some of his great works, and the life well lived. The touch Buechner gives whatever he is writing about is the most gentle and yet most searing touch I have encountered in literature. I love to read him when I am in need of calm in my own life.

Awesome book, great point of view - definitely gives plenty of food for thought. I liked that it was a book that could be read a chapter and a time, and then picked up at another time and another chapter read. Definitely fun...intriguing fun.

The gambler There's a book that I read almost every summer on the beach. I've read it more than 10 times now. The twists and turns of the story are hardly surprising me anymore. Now I read the book mostly to admire the writing. My copy is a nice hardbound and leather-back book. It was printed in 1946, and I bought it 2nd hand from an antiquarian many years ago. The book I'm talking about is The Gambler by Dostoyevsky. It's a relatively short narrative novel, just a little bit more than 200 pages. It's an easy and entertaining read, and a very suitable beach book, I think. The story takes place in a German gambling town with the brilliant name Roulettenburg. The protagonist and narrator is a tutor employed by a poor Russian General who has lost his past fortune. The General wants to marry a beatuiful woman, but to be able to do this, he needs money. Back in Russia is the old and very rich Grandmother who is expected to die very soon. Every day the General telegraphs to Russia, asking about her health. He is impatiently waiting for her death, and to inherit her fortune. One day, the old Grandmother unexpectedly arrives in Roulettenburg. She goes straight to the casino, to put her fortune (and the General's heritage) at stake by the roulette table ... and this is were the real fun begins. I say no more. Dostoyevsky was addicted to gambling himself. In this novel he gives a brilliant and in-depth exposition of gambling psychology, built on his personal experience (and if you're cusious about Dostoyevsky, I recommend the biography by Geir Kjetsaa)
Another book that moved me when I was younger. And I did have the privilege of visiting Corrie's house in 1994 and totally blown away by what they achieved. Unfortunately when you read many books you somewhat apply your current standards to the situation and when you actually see what the historical people experienced your mind cannot comprehend what they went through much less how. I know that it is an cliche, but Corrie was part of the Greatest Generation in my mind. Her sacrifice and honor would be found few and far between today.
