This is a beautiful and lyrical non-fiction book that describes the author's life in rural New Hampshire after the birth of one of her children. The problem is that the book is not about anything. It has no plot, no characters, and no development. Mostly it describes nature and animals, with occasional tangents for recipes. There were a few nice moments but it was way too rambling for me. When I look past the content problems I did sense some writing talent so I am curious to see if her fiction is better.

Good book, interesting story. Lots of great characters. I guessed the end before the end and it seemed to just dwindle away :-(. Still recommend though

This was definitely a more serious novel. It was a bit hard to get through. I liked that it was from the male POV and I liked Nick's character. I think it was well written.

A poem of how to raise a girl into a self-sufficient woman. Short and sweet.

the writing is beautiful but the book didn't do much to me...i turned the pages out of duty rather than desire.

the epistolary style - the original form aunt jane intended for sense and sensibility - is brilliant. funny in parts but learning that marianne acquired little sense is a downer.
I once read "Tender is the Night" also by Fitzgerald. I did not enjoy that book but I figured being from Minnesota I should give "The Great Gatsby" a try. Also, the Guthrie Theatre was doing a production of it and I wanted to read the book before I saw the play (or eventually the movie). So I read it. And I had the same feelings as when I read "Tender Is the Night." It's just not my taste. I was often more upset at the characters than enjoying the book. I like Fitzgerald's short stories, I just cannot seem to enjoy his novels. I guess his novels seem like they should be shorter. He just tried to expand them too much to make them novels when they would have made better short stories.
My full review is here on my personal website. I'll post a few excerpts here, though: 4.5 out of 5.0 stars The very worst thing about this book is that a dog is a main character! Yes, that’s my only complaint. The very best thing about this book is still Mogget! Although, I suppose the Disreputable Dog is pretty cool, too. For a nasty dog, that is.

Melancholy and georgeous. Love, treachery, alientation, and poetry--which we never get to read--as snowflake. Highly recommended.
