I really enjoyed this book. You can sit down and flip through it pretty quickly and get inspired by the different projects and visuals. There are things in here that I never would have thought of... like taking an old wooden slat table, covering it with grass sod. You end up having a pretty cool grass table top in your backyard or garden. The pictures are great and the book offers very precise step-by-step methods.

A triumph of hype over substance, I thought. I'm not sure whether this is because of Pamuk himself, or whether the astonishingly stiff and formal style of the narrative can be attributed to the translator, but I was very much underwhelmed by this. The aspects of the novel which covered the differences between Western Christian and Islamic perceptions of art and aesthetics were certainly interesting; there were also some moments of true inventiveness and creativity, such as the chapters which were narrated from the point of view of a sketch of a dog, or the colour red. For the most part, though, I found the characters unengaging, flat and irritating, with Pamuk liking to show off, almost, through them. It's a very uneven mix of dialogue, plot, history and theology, and while not a bad novel, per se, I really don't think I'll ever be coming back to it.

Seems appropriate to be reading these stories while I'm living in a suburb and commuting to work in the city; lots of stories are about riding trains into the suburbs... Of the 45 stories, there were about 10 I really liked.

I listened to this book on a long drive across Oregon to Wyoming. While the topic is grim, the descriptions are so good you easily immerse yourself in the world Orwell describes. Knowing that this life was real for so many people, including, for a time, Orwell, makes it all the more engaging.

The end is a bit rushed but the book is super fun. You have to enjoy the quirkiness of books like this to find this fun but if you like those types of books, this should be a nice quick read for you!
