A really engaging and (at times brutally) honest look at the three major monotheistic religions in modern America. It's maybe not brilliant or ground-breaking, but I think it's also really accessible and readable and delves into a lot of issues surrounding the American perception of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.

Meyer is a police officer in Sitka, Alaska. In the world of the book, the area has been given to the Jews following World War II and they are allowed to remain for 60 years. Meyer begins investigating a murder in his apartment complex which leads him through all sorts of strange discoveries and coincidences. All this is complicated by the fact that it's time for the Jews to leave Sitka and they're scrambling to find places to go. Themes: chess, divorce, pie at the airport, swear words are in the "American" language, tunnels under the city This is not the sort of book I usually read and enjoy, but I did enjoy it. It was very funny at times, especially when Meyer accidentally throws himself out the window in his underwear. His friend Berko is really interesting and funny too. This story had enough going on besides the murder-mystery that I was fairly engaged throughout.

This was written a million years ago; so many changes have happened in the interim. But it really gives you insight in the thinking of fiscal conservatives and self-made people. They're not all the stodgy, camphor-smelling, Bentley-driving stuck-ups you might think them to be (though many of them are). The book is a kind of classic. It also gave me insight into what my job of 2.5 years was all about - I worked for a lawyer who dealt in estate planning, transactional agreements, business entities.......... bleghh

read them over and over again :) This was one of the books that your sitting in the same space reading every page without looking at the page number or checking time. Nothing just you and the book. The whole book. In One Day you will have read it!! This goes for the whole sequel. L.J really did a great job with this, you can't wait to the next book :) If you haven't read it yet book a day in your calender, you will not regret it!

The plot got quite a bit thicker in this volume, and I'm glad. I appreciate the way Mark's relationships with mom and friends are playing out (surprisingly realistic considering), but they're not really substantial enough to carry the plot. It's clear that Mark telling his human girlfriend about his secret identity is going to backfire big time, probably soon. Sort of felt a bit overwhelmed by all the characters introduced in this volume, and I'm having a bit of trouble keeping track of all of them, but I think I've got a handle on it now. Really excited by the introduction of Angstrom Levy (though I hate that they're referring to alternate universes as other dimensions, ugh). However, I feel like it took the Levy character a ridiculous amount of time to complete his experiment/origin story and just GET ON with things. I hope Kirkman does something substantial with Levy in subsequent volumes. The Titan/Machine Head side plot was promising, but was too short and felt like it didn't do much except prove that Invincible, more often than not, just...isn't. For an invincible dude, he's beat up and bested a ridiculous amount. That kind of pisses me off, although maybe it's supposed to be a joke in a way. Also, the Tether Tyrant is the weirdest? dumbest? villain I've seen so far. Found D.A. Sinclair an intriguing villain, but...will we see him again? He showed up and then disappeared almost instantly. Glad to see more of Allen the Alien. Felt bad when he got torn apart by Viltrumites (in a scene that was maybe a bit overly graphic and yet, again, THE BLOOD LOOKS LIKE KETCHUP), glad he didn't actually die. Curious to see who the mole in the head council of the coalition is (my guess is it's Thaedus the sweet grandfatherly guy who's warning against the mole). Soooo....clearly I am getting into this comic quite a bit! Much prefer to read collected volumes; I think I would have a hard time following this stuff if I had to read each issue individually as it was published.

Another book for the armchair explorer in me...wreck diving is very claustrophobic and extremely dangerous. Fortunately the two guys profiled here liked it enough to do it, and discovered a World Ward II German U-Boat off the coast of New Jersey. It took years to figure out what it was doing there...

Alluring title but really just random quotes by celebrities pertaining to Christianity or lack of faith. Then, the author follows up with the Biblical support or lack thereof....Not a heavy hitting book but a quick read....

Kind of a slog to get through this one, but if you want to understand how the Middle East came to be such a screwed up place, a lot of the why and how is here.
No Exit is much better than the others.
