In The Lady in Red we get Blake's story, who worked with Sydney and covered the sports beat(in The Loner and makes an appearance here). Blake used to be a very good crimes beat reporter when one of his informant got killed, which affected Blake greatly and he moved to writing about sports. Now, he's moved to San Antonio to be closer to his grandfather and his friend and newspaper owner gives him the crime beat which he is reluctant to take. This brings him to compete against Sabrina Jones, a crime beat reporter for a rival newspaper. Very soon these two are in fierce competition with Blake wondering about his attraction to her(his ex-girlfriend blind-sided him by marrying another man). Sabrina likes her job but when it comes to personal relationships is wary(the women in her family get married multiple times and for her one divorce is enough). I enjoyed the book but didn't love it, there was a big sub-plot about women who look like Sabrina getting killed and Blake wanting to protect her even when going against her.

زن نیک سه چوان که در 1038 نوشته شده، و تا 1943 کامل نشده است، یکی از درخشان ترین نمایش نامه های مکتب "تیاتر حماسی برشت" است، که در اصل ضد مکتب ارسطویی ست. واقعه ی نمایش در شهر سه چوان در منطقه ی جنوبی چین رخ می دهد. ونگ، یک اب فروش، راوی داستان است و برای تماشاچیان توضیح می دهد که منتظر نزول خدایان به شهر است. خدایان یا فرشتگان که به منظور یافتن انسان های "نیک" بر روی زمین آمده اند، مقصودشان یافتن دلیل منطقی برای خلق بشر است. اما از همان ابتدا روشن می شود که در شهر سه چوان هم انسان های نیک، پیدا نمی شوند. کسی حاضر نیست به خدایان که از آزمایش همه جای جهان، خسته به این شهر رسیده اند، جایی برای اقامت بدهد. همه حریص و شیطان صفت و ناشریف و خودخواه اند. تنها شن ته، یک فاحشه که با یک مشتری قرار دارد، حاضر می شود از قرارش بگذرد و به خدایان سرپناهی بدهد. اما سردرگمی از همین لحظه آغاز می شود. شن ته که در دکان حققیرش به مهمانان جای داده، با پول آنها برایشان توتون و چیزهای دیگر آماده می کند. همین که بنظر می رسد شن ته انتظار خدایان را برآورده، زودی مغازه از مجرمین و پلیس که به آنجا کشیده شده اند، پر می شود و کنترل از دست شن ته خارج می شود و به ناچار از پسرعمویش شویی تا که جاکش است، کمک می گیرد. شن ته با لباس مردانه و یک ماسک و تغییر صدا در هیات شویی تا ظاهر می شود و نظم و آرامش را تا اندازه ای به محیط باز می گرداند. هرچقدر شن ته ساده و صادق و احساساتی ست، شویی تا بی احساس و فرصت طلب و بدجنس بنظر می رسد و در چشم بهم زدنی مغازه را به کارگاهی با کارگران متعدد تبدیل می کند. شن ته که عاشق یک خلبان بیکار است، با وجودی که خلبان به دنبال پول اوست، از او استفاده می کند و شن ته آبستن می شود. یکی از کارگران صدای گریه ی شن ته را می شنود و شویی تا نمی تواند شن ته را حاضر کند. لاجرم شویی تا را به جرم کشتن دخترعمویش شن ته و پنهان کردن جسد او، به دادگاه می کشند. خدایان در جایگاه قضات ظاهر می شوند و از شوئی تا می خواهند تا به قتل اعتراف کند. اتاق از مردم خالی می شود و شوئی تا در خلوت، واقعیت را برای قضاوت فاش می کند. او خود شن ته ساده دل است که در هیات شویی تای بدجنس ظاهر شده تا از پس متقلبین و رشوه خواران برآید. قضات به این نتیجه می رسند که زندگی امکانات خوب ماندن و نیک بودن آدم ها را غیرممکن کرده است و شرایط مانع آن است تا "نیکان" به دلخواه خود زندگی کنند. با این نتیجه، راوی مشکل پیدا کردن راه حل را به عهده ی تماشاگران می گذارد که؛ در این شرایط چه باید کرد؟ تماشاگران باید راه حلی پیدا کنند تا داستان به پایانی خوش برسد. ظاهرن در گفت و گویی که در می گیرد، تماشاگران به این نتیجه می رسند که جامعه باید عوض شود.

OMG why did this book have to end?!?!? Please make it into a movie NOW!! I want so badly to debrief about this book - I have so many questions, theories, & pure astonishment in my head... I had no idea how much this book would be about dogs. And yet, as a mute boy creates his own sign language and successfully trains generations of dogs by signing, you find yourself reassessing what communication is. What are the signs and signals we use and look for to direct behaviors and choices, to direct ourselves, or to seek direction for ourselves? What are our guideposts in life - speech? parents? companions? physical boundaries and borders? And what happens when a guidepost is removed, much to our shock and bewilderment? How do we find our own way? How do we guide others? What do others mean to us and why? This book explores all of these issues, all while being a full tilt action/adventure (of which I'm generally not a fan). It keeps you guessing and trying to discern the little nuances and hints and mysteries it unravels. I'm kind of dumbfounded, having just finished it moments ago. Need to marinate on it a bit more. WOW.

Carla Buckley pulled me right into her pandemic through her characters. Considering what my reactions might be while reflecting upon the decisions that the characters had to consider was fascinating to me. Although I did not find it an "I can not put it down" kind of book, I recommend it.

I read this book in a philosophy of science class focused on Italian scientists (Dante, Leonardo, Galileo, Primo Levi). The theme of the class was "bridging the gap between science and the humanities," and one of the more fascinating aspects of the class was seeing how, historically, there was no gap. The other really interesting thing that came to light for me was the fact that, for the most part, the people who are actively trying to cross the divide were the scientists. The ivory tower intellectuals rarely involve themselves in matters of science, but the scientists often play music, enjoy art and literature, theater, and other cultural activities, and their scientific lives integrate into the rest of their life. But not so in the other direction. Galileo was not only a brilliant scientist and philosopher, he also pioneered the use of the vernacular in scientific writing, and was passionate about elevating Italian into a great language. Most non-scientists think of scientific writing as dry and boring, but Galileo's thinking is not compartmentalized. He is writing in a time when a "philosopher" was also expected to be a scientist. This was prior to "natural philosophy," (i.e., science) being hacked off of philosophy, leaving a gulf between thinking about the world and exploring it physically in a rigorous manner. This book is highly readable and Drake provides excellent introductions to each section that provide context and background information.

The artwork is lush and gorgeous, though perhaps a bit too lush when it comes to the female characters -- the golden tones and full lips tend to make them all a bit too sexy for the end of the 18th century. Still, I'm looking forward to going back to read the whole thing, but from what I've seen, I don't entirely care for the adaptation. Particularly as a recommendation for students, I think there are too many liberties taken to be strictly accurate to the book, as well as a great deal more smiling than in an movie adaptation I've ever seen.
