I teeter on 3 or 4 stars. I hesitated to read a memoir about a rape but the begining had sucked me in in a car crash sort of way. Her story of how she tried so hard to cope and was not very successful at first was so real and sad yet still inspiring knowing where her path eventually led--successful author. I teeter because I think it interested me more because she was a succesful author and it was her story than it would have if she was just any one else.

I couldn't find the first book in the series, so I hope I'm not violating some sacred ritual by starting with book 2. I finally finished the book, and I think I have to read the rest of this series. (thank you Wendy) I like the pace of Konrath's stories. They're fast, but memorable, and I just couldn't put this book down. My rating? Is a 5 stars rating too much? Nah, I don't think so.

Cool mix of text and graphic design. Though McLuhan's responding to the advent of television and how it was changing the culture, many of his points still translate well to how things are still changing (rapidly). It's also nice and short, concise, so if you've ever wondered about McLuhan then, hey, here's a great place to start.

I first read Holden Caulfield bitch about everyone and everything (except his kid sister) when I was in high school and have read it several times in the 20 years since I graduated. Each time I love it as much as the first time...although I no longer identify with him due to a bad rash called teenage angst. I outgrew that along with my big '80s Flock of Seagulls glasses.

Some well done vignettes in a collection that chronicles a poor Hispanic girl's early life.

Excellent. If plays aren't supossed to provide answers but only more questions, this one's aces. Deals very painfully and accurately with the question of responsibility to one's self versus responsibility to friends and family.

To me, this book was very heavy going at first, and I almost gave up on it. The only reason I continued reading is because it has gotten such acclaim in certain circles. However, once I got past about the first third of the book, it was enjoyable and the last third was very good. I wish, however, that my enjoyment level had been more or less the same throughout. Without creating a spoiler, I do want to say that even in the context of the culture and its times, it was amazing to me that Amina and her family tolerated -- and even encouraged, to a certain extent -- Al-Sayyid Ahmad's hypocritical and reprehensible behavior with his family.
the best of the series
Fascinating view of life in India from a criminal's perspective. Too much violence and much too long. I skimmed the last 300 pages because I wanted to know what happened to the girlfriend.
