There are so many of these Pride and Prejudice spinoffs that you really cannot keep count with them. Me and Mr Darcy by Alexandra Potter is one of them. It is a story about life, love and most importantly dating literature's ultimate hottie, Mr. Darcy. Emily Albright from New York has got some horribly dates. She is getting desperate. She decides that everything is over between her and modern-day life. She would rather just curl up at sofa, take out her favorite novel, Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice and start reading about the man of her dreams, Mr. Darcy. When her best friend suggest a wild party trip to Mexico with the girls, Emily decided to fell to England for a guided tour of Jane Austen's country. The trip is not like she expected. The bus is filled with giggling old ladies and only one men, Spike Hargreaves, a journalist writing an article about why Mr. Darcy has earned the title of the most desired men of the world. At points the story gets all supernatural when Emily suddenly meets Mr. Darcy himself. Darcy is broodinly handsome and the first time Emily sees him he rides across the field in a damp shirt which clings to his chest. (lol) All this supernaturality and the fact that at points Emily and Darcy start to speak the words Elizabeth and Darcy speak in Pride and Prejudice just made me laugh, not in a good way. Emily starts to question that is Mr. Darcy really the man he wants, or is someone else, perhaps Spike, more her type. Eventually Emily stops dreaming about Mr. Darcy because he is fantasy and settles for something else. Okay, the idea of this novel is... okay? But otherwise, it was pretty much crap to be honest. The beginning of the novel was okay, the ending so so, but otherwise, don't bother to read this book. The name of the novel made me all interested about it, even the synopsis at the cover was okay, but as a novel, this was a disappointment for me.

Got this for $0.99 on Kindle and I certainly got my money's worth of entertainment. I liked the slightly shady Ray character and the supernatural world he moves in. There are a few somewhat illogical elements - for example, why does the ghost knife cut through metal? Also, I don't think the writer's quite hit his stride yet on structure and development. Still, I'm adding #2 to my queue.

This book had a lot of promise in the core, underlying theme revealed "officially" three-quarters of the way through the book. But it was simply poorly written. There was almost no suspense or characterization which, for me, left me cold. I actually loved Cryptonomicon which had a similar approach to encasing a very technological or scientific discussion within a larger narrative (as a math geek and a reader, I definitely appreciated it). But Anathem is really the worse of all of Stephenson's writerly instincts put together - his scope of discussion is essentially "all of physics and philosophy" and his frequent inability to understand what makes people tick just gets in his way. Each character had one trait and, for the life of me, I literally couldn't tell you one interesting thing about the narrator - Erasmus is a cipher. This leaves aside another annoying and frustrating part of the book - the made-up language of Arbre. I get that, to some extent, there's a point to it. But it made me roll my eyes on page one and it kept me doing so for the rest of the book. I'm hoping that Stephenson gets back into his Diamond Age/Snow Crash mode for Reamde.

I read this right after some Ishiguro unreliable narrator stuff, so I was kind of in that mode already. I just love the way McEwan understands characters, I think he's ahead of his time.

This is book presents a fascinating insight to the moral motivation for studying linguistics, specifically discourse in its social setting. Everyone speaks multiple "social langauges" that they use in many different situations. These langauges and word choice reveal our values and belief about the world and our society. These beliefs are typically tacit and difficult to explain. However, when these biases cause harm to anyone and/or put one group at an advantage to another we have the moral obligation to understand these tacit belief and make them explicit....there's a lot more I could write, but what's the point. ليست الحرفية أبرز مقومات الأسلوب في هذه الرواية. كنت أتوقع رواية توثيقية فذة فيها ما هو أعمق مما قدمته الحبكة الهوليوودية للقصة. نشر الكتاب في عام 2007 ولعل هذا ما جعلني أصدم حينما وصلت إلى فقرة "غزو العراق للكويت". كان علي أن أتوقع ذلك، فكثير من الدلالات تشير إلى أن الأحداث لا تجري في الزمن الحاضر: أشرطة الكاسيت، والمسجلات والتمحور حول التلفاز كوسيلة تسلية بدل الحاسوب، وانعدام الإشارة إلى الهاتف المحمول.. كلها من علامات فترة سابقة. ولذلك فإنني لا أدري، هل يمكن إسقاط ما قرأته على الوضع الحالي؟ هل الحياة -بالنسبة للخدم وبالنسبة لمستخدميهم- بشعة إلى هذا الحد؟ هل الفليبينيون المبتسمون المهذبون الذين ألتقي بهم في المطاعم والمتاجر، أتوا من بيئة قاسية كتلك التي أتت منها بطلة القصة؟ كيف يعيش البشر بعيداً عن ذويهم دون حياة اجتماعية ودون عائلة لسنوات؟ لا أعتقد أن الرواية بتعاملها السطحي مع المشاعر، وبالحوار غير الواقعي فيها، وباختيارها لظروف غير عادية كإطار لأحداثها قد أفلحت في الإجابة عن كثير من الأسئلة التي تراودني حينما أرى الابتسامة المهذبة لعامل في الخليج ولا أملك إلا أن أتساءل: هل وراء هذه الابتسامة سعادة حقيقية؟ الموضوع يحتاج في نظري إلى أكثر من حك القشرة الذي قامت به هذه الرواية. تذكرت عبقرية الهنود في الحديث عن فقرهم وكفاحهم في روايات مثل النمر الأبيض والمليونير المتشرد، وأتساءل إن كان أحد منهم قد فكر في إصدار رواية تحكي التجربة الخليجية "من الداخل". بالمناسبة، الغلاف بشع وغير معبر.
