Like 1977, this volume of the Red Riding Quartet took me quite a while to get in to (100 pages, to be exact) - but once hooked, it was hard to put down. I feel the challenge for Peace throughout this series was to create unique narrative voices (since each story is told from the very close POV of different characters), while still maintaining some sense of familiarity from book to book. The narrative voice of Peter Hunter just never clicked for me, and the constant repetition of long passages of text felt much too gimmicky (and became quite boring after a while). All that said, however, I think 1980 had the clearest and, perhaps, most "thrilling" plot of the series. More calculated and far less graphic, 1980 was a nice break from the bleak and chaotic intensity of 1974 and 1977. SIDE NOTE: I loved the BBC miniseries based on the books, and thought the film-version of 1974 was a great adaptation of Peace's original work. With 1980, however, I feel the film makers really missed their mark.
I had this book recommended to me by a librarian who said if you like a good story read this. "Kitchen House" was very engrossing and based in the history of the South (Virginia) of the U.S during the times of slavery, in the 1890's, a very ugly time in our history. The book is narrated by two people, the first is Belle, the illegitimate daughter of the Captain, the owner of the plantation. She was conceived when the captain (a white man) had a relationship with one of his slaves, which you realize very quickly is a big theme in this book. The captain though, is a good man and wants a good life for Belle but regardless, she is kept in the Kitchen House with the other slaves and is treated like all the other "Negroes". The captain has married a white woman and she has bore him children though she is in the dark as to her husband's relationship to Belle and all the time, she suspects that Belle is the captain's whore so she and her eldest child, Marshall, treat her horribly. The other narrator, is Lavinia, who is a white girl from Ireland and was passenger on one of the Captain's ships and both her mother and father died on the passage from Ireland to the U.S. Her parents owed the captain a fare and so when they died, he took the daughter as an "indentured servant" back to his plantation. I did not know the prevalence of indentured servitude of white people (particularly those of Irish descent) during the time of slavery in the U.S.and I also didn't know how rampant promiscuity was between slave owners and their slaves. Of course, the slaves were viewed as the property of their white owners so they were forced into sexual servitude. Lavinia has an interesting relationship with the slaves who end up raising her for she sees herself as one of them and though they treat her with endless kindness, they never forget that she has white skin and that the future that is open to her can include freedom which they will never see in their lifetime.

I love this series so much! Heather Webber has a talent for writing stories that are funny without being zany, touching without being overdramating, and mysteries that make you wonder until the end. Lucy is such a great character, and I'm enjoying her family just as much. Sean is, of course, still as amazing as ever. I am glad Lucy isn't rushing into things with him, as I agree with her that he's keeping a few things hidden. Can't wait for the next installment!

3 star medical thriller (top 50% of the genre). One of 4 books in CJ Lyons' Angels of Mercy series featuring female medical professionals in an ER in Pittsburgh, this isn't the strongest one of the bunch but the series as a whole is fabulous. For my full review, see ScienceThrillers.com
meh.

This book was not quite what I was expecting, although I liked it. It was pretty in depth with how the brain works and the different structures and development, however having some background there made it interesting to read.

I loved this. It was a quick read and although it had the feeling of Harry Potter due to the premise of a boy who was destined for a great and mysterious future I completely forgot about the similarities by the third chapter.
