After reading Auster’s Book of Illusions back in February of this year, I boldly proclaimed that “I’ve got to read everything Paul Auster’s ever written.” Holding true to this statement I continued my journey with his latest offering, 2010’s Sunset Park. It did not disappoint. Auster, like another personal favorite Don DeLillo, has the ability to perfectly capture the smallest everyday moments and describe them in such an enthralling way. Twenty pages can fly by in the blink of an eye before one realizes that the information that’s being presented, while thoroughly engrossing and undeniably interesting, probably means little in terms of the outcome of the novel. Unlike the DeLillo of today, who seems content to scoff at the idea of an actual plot, Auster uses these moments as building blocks, each one carefully stacked upon the previous, to erect a larger overall plot. Impressions: In "Shiver" Maggie Stiefvater had set the stage for the pack of "Werewolves" and had described the profiles of the main characters. In "Linger," the focus is on the relationships, the friendships, the family. Certainly, one is awaiting the further adventures of Sam and Grace wich are told plainly and nicely without the mushy spilling of marshmallow. The description of the emerging feelings is very beautiful and full of restraint. This couple is balanced by the duo Cole and Isabelle. A breeze of fresh air blowing with the emergence of these two bothered and fragile characters . Inividuals and situations are not vapid and I really enjoyed the stories turn more tinged with black. The author talk about the desire to die, to surrender to the facility to the excesses of all kinds. Maggie Stiefvater deals with family relationships and the difficulty of growing up even if you are coming from a wealthy family or not. Of a united and potector family or a remote and cold one. First of all... don't get pissed of the mistery which was not a mistery. I don't know if Amanda Young wants intentionally give us so much clue to unveal the hidden secret from the start, but she does that and so the big surprise you will have at the end of the book for me is not so big. And so I have had the chance to indulge in something else, like the tender wooing Ryan starts with Andrew. Ryan and Andrew meet thanks to a blind date common friends organize. In the beginning Ryan thinks Andrew not to be his type: Andrew is rich and cultered, lives on previous accumulated wealthy and is a single father. Ryan is an exterior architect and has built his fortune by himself. He is a simple man and loves the handwork. And at thirtyone years old he has just stopped to cruising and maybe he is ready to start something serious, but a man with a little daughter? But Andrew is so nice and sexy... I like both Ryan and Andrew. They are different, as different as can be white and black, but the sparks between them are hot. Ryan is the down-and-dirty soon type, Andrew is the quite and thinking one. Ryan is a Harley and denim type, Andrew a SUV and slacks one. But in bed they are very compatible and so, maybe, they can find a way to be together. One only regret: when Amanda Young has introduced the supporting character of Bobby, at the beginning of the story, how she has described him... well, I'm, for some moment, been a fan of him to be the main character of the book :-) http://www.amazon.com/dp/1605047775/?...

Another series that dropped off my radar for a while, I actually remembered it because Mike Shepherd name-dropped the author in Redoubtable. Anyway, this is military SF that is super-focused on battles, but does a good job of paying attention to stuff like speed-of-light delays, giving a nice edge of reality to it. (Sorry, Mr. Shepherd, your molecule camera broke my credulity.) Also has way fewer egregious editing errors than the Longknife books, as in, I only noticed one. Lots of fun and I can't wait to get the last book in the series.

This has the cut-outs and clean art that reminds me of Laura Vaccaro Seeger's work. Each of the plurals here is an exception to the rule: mouse - mice, goose - geese. To help little ones keep count, there's a running record on the left-hand pages of what we've counted - 1 foot, 2 feet, 3 mice... up to 10. Or, a billion at the end, which felt a bit tacked on. Still, easy enough for young readers to master.

Second Reading: Such a long, inclusive book naturally included many reactions and emotions. I read this for the first time in high school in a few days - couldn't put it down. It was interesting to read it again having gone through college and recognizing things like misogyny and racism. Accordingly, there were many phrases and descriptions of black people that were unbearable. I really enjoyed the gendered rules that were set forth and seeing Scarlet shatter them. And that was the true crux of the book: Scarlet. She is such a fascinating, flawed character. It is difficult to judge her because though she often thinks horrible things about others, she often does the right things. Another reason why the 5 star rating stands is that this book and the characters therein inhabit my thoughts and change the way I perceive the world. At one point, Melanie is being regaled with the difficulties of Scarlet and Rhett's lives and it says that Melanie could hardly comprehend the trials spoken of. Her life was full of love and people who treated her kindly. I know that we cannot choose the way that people will treat us, but we are far more likely to receive kindness and love when we dole out kindness and love.
