I loved this book because it is totally different in style from the other Carlyle books I've read, so fans of Carlyle beware: no mushy, sweet, loving, adoring heroes in this one. The hero, Kieran, wins the hand of the heroine in a card game. He doesn't particularly care for a wife, but in a spurr of the moment he decides to save her from a rake worse than himself, plus he desires her. Besides, he's just learned he's probably terminally ill, so it's not like this is going to be with her forever... Camille, raised in France, needs an English husband before her 28th birthday due in 2 months, so she can win a portion of her grandfather's inheritance. If she also manages to get with child within 2 years, she will gain the rest of the inheritance and thus become independant from her lecherous father. So, she's more than happy to go on with this marriage, thinking she can use her husband to get with child and have nothing more to do with him besides that. After all, he's a known rake who's already told her she shouldn't count on him in any way. Both Kieran and Camille, are people who carry their own burden. Camille has been self sufficient for too long and believes that caring for Kieran, who still continues to drink and stay all night out after their marriage, will only lead to suffering. Kieran on the other hand, tries to keep his distance because he believes that it would be easier for Camille to cope with his death if she doesn't care at all for him. But they are both misfits, people who have never been loved by anyone before, and the glimpse of care and kindness that they see in each other pulls them together. The fact that there is a powerful sexual attraction between them doesn't hurt either. Camille is the right woman for Kieran; strong enough to pull him out of his path to self destruction and also overcome her own fear of trusting her heart to a man. Kieran is a man who doesn't speak much, but his actions prove to Camille there is tenderness and feelings for her under his tough facade, even though he refuses to aknowledge them. I really liked seeing those two taking small steps everyday to get out of their shells and very gradualy fall in love. It was not a love in first sight match, or a sweet, tender, teenage romance. Both Camille and Kieran behaved as real grown ups and had some really heavy baggage to carry. The transition from two strangers to two people deeply caring for each other was smooth and tentative and tender and neither too fast nor too slow; no sudden epiphanies for the heroes in this one. It's also stripped of Carlyle's usual melodrama, over sentimentalism and flowery dialogues. People in favor of more sweet and loving than aloof and self-controlled heroes/heroines should pass this one.

I know alot of my list is very cliche, but I can reread "The Lovesong of Alfred J. Prufrock" and take in something new each time.

I think I like the cover best, even if it doesn't quite describe the blossom that grows out Laurel's back. I like the plot, even though it's not totally original, though I found the writing to be awkward with some grammatical errors to boot. When listening to an audiobook, mediocre writing really pops out. What I did like was the idea of Laurel being a faeire who was left as a baby in a basket to live with a couple in a log cabin in the woods, woods of great significance to the faeires. After Laurel and her family move away Laurel attends school for the first time and becomes close friends with David. He even helps her out when a blossom begins to grow from her back and after looking at a piece of it under a microscope, confirms that she is a plant. On a trip home with her family, Laurel meets Tamani, another faerie who explains much about her situation to her. Laurel is drawn to him. In fact she's drawn to both Tamani and David, whether to live among humans or faeries? This is good fare for the Twilight crowd without the repressed sexuality and violence. I liked it much more and it's much shorter. Sequels follow. There is also a battle over the land, but I won't spoil it.

Good picture book of the 2004 season. Sad that only a few of the players still remain on the team and it's only 2007.
I wanted to like this book, but I was annoyed by it.
I didn't finish this book. I gave it two stars because I can see the merit and the half-way decent story. There was just too much that didn't make sense to me. Too many things that didn't flow and ruined it. It's a good idea, but I feel there were way too many things that were not carefully thought through.

I'm not a huge fan of bugs, but I love the illustrations in this book. The bugs are realistic, without being icky. They capture the beauty in insects well. The text has a predictable pattern that makes a nice rhythm. This is broken at the perfect place near the end. I had the pleasure of listening to Mike show this book to Natalie from the other room. It was so fun waiting for him to get to the chirping. He thought it was super cool.

Fascinating... Using the possible future effects of global warming and genetic manipulation, Margaret Atwood once again succeeds in creating a convincing story set in a fictional world.

For the first 100 pages or so, I thought it was a good effort for a first novel, then I continued reading. By the end, the plot was so ridiculously unbelieveable. Not my cup of tea. I'd avoid it.
What a great story, I definitely enjoyed the first book of this series. It definitely gives the weather warden world a completely different point of view from the djinn perspective and I love how Rachel Caine tied The Weather Warden series with this series. I like how Cassie had to learn how to be human and realize in the end that the Djinn do need humans. I can't wait for book 2! Rachel Caine ROCKS!!!
