I wasn't sure what to think of this book to start with -- it was a gift from a friend, by an author I had never heard of. I wasn't all that interested in Buddhism at the time, either. The book sat on my shelf for years, waiting to be read. Well, I finally got around to it, and it's actually quite good. Memoirs can be sort of hit or miss, but Chadwick manages to bring us along with us on his experience as an American living in Japan, for the good and the bad. His portrait of the country and its people seems balanced (speaking as someone who's never been there), and he doesn't ignore the problems of living in a foreign land, even one where you know the language. He treats just about everyone sympathetically in his writings, even when he's talking about the kinds of petty conflicts that he witnessed when he was living among the monks in Hogoji. Those sections are really some of the best in the book--it gets a little less compelling in the segments taking place later, when he and his fiancee are renting a house in Maruyama, near a temple but no longer subject to the constraints of monkish life. The prose is smooth and conversational, and the whole thing is a pretty light, pleasant read. If you, like me, have always been interested in living abroad in a very different culture but never been ballsy enough to actually do it, you'll probably enjoy this book.
