If you've read her other book, It's just my nature, don't read this one, some of the chapters are exactly the same. However I do recommend if you are a women to read this one instead of her other book. I like her concepts and want to learn more, it's just that you have to take her online course to do that.

After all the hype surrounding this book, there is actually little new information for anyone who follows baseball in New York. Clearly the book is written by Verducci whose voice is what shines through, not Joe Torre's. Unfortunately Verducci's writing style is trite and repetitive, and he tries to make scandals out of not-overly-interesting stories. Torre, of course, comes across as a peacemaker in the Yankee world of devious front office shenanigans, and fragile big-money ballplayer egos. But if you've ever picked up the NY Daily News, you knew that already didn't you?

I had high expectations for this installment of the Twelve Houses series, especially because the first one was awesome and I liked Kirra's character in it. But this book not only spent way too much time on the "doomed romance" angle, it also did not develop the REAL storyline- impending war- enough for me. I kept waiting for the pace to pick up a bit. But I absolutely love Sharon Shinn as an author and have read every book she's ever written. I will still read Dark Moon Defender to give this series another chance.

Looking for readable contemporary literary criticism? Who knew it was out there? Chi'en has worthy readings of Junot Diaz and Nabokov.

This book was really fascinating - ice is actually a pretty freaky substance because it's less dense as a solid than as a liquid. And if it weren't, a lot of the natural world would look way different. Also, polar bears.

The subtitle states, "Reflections on Raising Chickens." This has some comical accounts of the author's experiences with chickens. It has me laughing and is timely since I just bought my first set of hens. Here's an excerpt for you: "Had Ethel been human, she would have worn tweeds, had blue-rinsed hair and been keen on blood sports. She was a control freak who would stomp around the run letting everyone else know that in life's pecking order they were there to be pecked. Egg-laying appeared to b e something she did under sufferance--it got in the way of eating or yanking the feathers out of somebody else's neck." I have learned a lot about raising chickens--and had a good time reading it!

** spoiler alert ** The first half of this book is the reason people who say you can get just as much out if the series by using some of the reading order guides as you can by reading in published order. This book is often placed as a stand alone novel or as part of the Ankh Morpork series. Which I believe is a huge mistake. The wizards feature heavily in this book which features the first appearances of Ridcully and Ponder Stibbons, The Librarian is a particularly important player. This is Gaspode's first appearance as well as the book where Detritus & Ruby meet so it links to the Guards series. You also get a lot of insight into CMOT Dibbler as a person & I feel that if you read out of order his appearances in the other books won't mean as much to you. If you read in published order you will see that around this point the world starts to take shape into something familiar. That said the second half of this one isn't very good in my opinion I find the movie references a bit forced and I don't really care about the two main characters. Unlike pyramids it doesn't bother me that we never find out what happened to them.

I love this book. I identify with the Randy Waterhouse. We are both Dwarves! I love how Neal Stephenson makes historical figures come alive as characters in his books. I've also read the entire Baroque Cycle. Learned a lot about the British monarchy of the 17th century. I've read this one twice.

This is school staple in South Africa and most kids have read it because of that. However, it is also a beautiful book that I would recommend to anyone interested in South Africa's history, environmental issues and Knysna.
