Subjective as memory is, when we begin to lose vast chunks of it, we become unreliable as narrators of our own lives, and even those memories that are etched on our brains become suspect. Harvey's narrator, Jake Jameson, a retired architect, is suffering from Alzheimer's disease. The book meanders, as his mind does, back and forth through the years and experiences of his life, exploring how we create and recreate ourselves over time, and how when memory starts to go, others are free to challenge what we know of ourselves based on the places where their own memories intersect with our lives. One of several things that Jake keeps coming back to is his mother's recreation of herself as non-Jewish: an Austrian who left for England before the war, and whose entire family perished in the holocaust, she is irritated by Jake's concern for Israel after the war, and does everything she can to convince him not to go out on a limb, not to identify as a Jew. The wilderness of the title both refers to the English moors, where Jake, as a young married man takes his wife, with the idea of conquering them architecturally, but even more so to the wilderness in his mind as he tries to grasp truths, even non-literal ones, from the memories that flash by. This is a contemplative, interior read. There is not a lot of action, and what action there is remains questionable in its veracity, but it is a fascinating look at the role of memory in our lives.

"A Homemade Life" was a pleasure to read. I read all but 40 pages of this book in one afternoon, which is usually a good sign. Molly's writing and descriptive stories create vivid imagery and instant camaraderie. Any food lover would enjoy her delightful accounts, tidbits, and recipes. Her reveling in her father made me ponder my family a little bit. While reading her work, I couldn't help but think that if anyone who is a parent wants to know about him or herself, they should just ask their child(ren). Does anyone watch another as diligently as a child does her mother and/or father?? It never occurred to me that each and every person who has a child inadvertently leaves a legacy/legend behind whether or not it is realized (good and bad). There is a great deal more than food to take away from this novel. Two of my favorite quotes from "A Homemade Life"are: "When I walk into a my kitchen today, I am not alone. Whether we know it or not, none of us is. We bring fathers and mothers and kitchen tables, and every meal we have ever eaten. Food is never just food. It's also a way of getting at something else: who we are, who we have been, and who we want to be." "He brought a deep-seated need for pizza, the kind that only an East Coaster can know" This might be one of the books I will buy to add to the esteemed "permanent shelf".
