This is another book that I couldn't pinpoint exactly what it was I liked about it, it was just a magnificent story. It's not a deep or terribly moving tale, but it's a fun romp with all the good parts a fantasy novel/fairy tale story should have.

A well-done take off of "The Twilight Zone" episode "Number Twelve Looks Just Like You."

Waitress Wanda Nell is helping at a bachelor party when the guest of honor keels over. It's not too surprising: the dead policeman had already been widowed twice in peculiar "accidents" that left him richer. Ordinarily. Wanda Nell tells herself, she wouldn't interfere, but the state policeman investigating is Bill Warren, who was her high school boyfriend, and who seems determined to arrest the dead man's ineffectual brother. Wanda's boyfriend Jack has a cousin with problems, too--she's moved to Tullahoma, MS, to get away from a stalker in Meridian, who is a policeman, too.

The model for the five temptations is great for anyone looking to be the leader of any team, big or small. The leadership 'fable' really lacks. I'd recommend this short easy read to any leader.
Excellent reader that presents both readings fairly and let's the reader pick a position.

I do not think short stories are Tóibín's strongest suit - I think longer forms serve him better (my favorite story was the longest story). A good short story can be (though I don't want to make any really strong normative claims) a bit like a slap out of nowhere, and he doesn't have that talent, which I think I . . . probably should have guessed before reading these. But my evaluation of this book is probably not totally fair, because Brooklyn is still fresh in my mind, and I love Brooklyn with an adolescent passion. (Picture the sobbing girls in A Hard Day's Night. Now go read Brooklyn.) These are all perfectly good stories, and I wouldn't be like "Jesus, the New Yorker has really let itself go, right?" if one of them turned up in an issue (and some of them have). One of the cover blurbs (bastions of reliability, I know!) mentions that this would be a good introduction to his work. That seems to me a fair evaluation of them, but I imagine if you've loved his novels - or, in my case, novel - then you would find these a bit of a disappointment. As I've mentioned, I know this is unfair: a combination of my personal aesthetics re: short stories and the fresh memory of Brooklyn conspired against this collection, so. All the same, he can do better.

Perhaps one of my all time favorite books. It's all about living a God-sized life. I was really encouraged and blessed by this book!

love it.
For whatever reason, this book didn't grab me as much as K&C did, despite my enjoyment of the noir aspects of it and the "what if?" nature of the premise. Maybe my expectations were too high going into it.
This guy really makes eating an all raw diet seem like the most natural thing to do. In theory. In practice, personally, I enjoy cooked food way too much to give it up forever. Overall, though, a very informative, interesting, and quick read for anyone interested in raw foods.
