The Vineyard by Barbara Delinsky started off by reminding me of one of my favorite books, The Villa by Nora Roberts; however, after I got over the similarity of name and setting, I was pulled along by the characters in Delinsky's book. I do think that the back cover is misleading in saying that it's Natalie's story, since most of it is from the point of view of Olivia, but I guess the story only occurs because of Natalie's need for a writer.
I'm kind of grateful that I didn't previously know very much about Hemingway's life, much less his wife Hadley's, because there was never any moment in this book where I definitely knew what would happen next. Beautifully written, this book was a favorite of mine. I really sympathized with Hadley and found the book to be a fascinating look at marriage, literary history and life in the 1920's.

I finished this a while ago, I just forgot to mark it as read. In this book, Halt is hit by a poisoned arrow and Will and Horace have to find a cure. Halt survives and they all finish of the Outsiders.

Extremely quick read. Read it in one day and couldn't put it down. Very inspirational. Reminded me about how important the little things in life are. We need to stop and breath and enjoy all the beauty around us on a daily basis! The dishes and laundry can wait....love each other and this wonderful planet we live on! :0)

Given to me by a Book Club friend whose taste in books is one I respect. This is somewhat of a soap opera about a Korean immigrant family living in a poor suburb of NYC. The parents struggle to send their 2 daughters to college & then the father throws the elder daughter out when she resists the usual Manhattan investment banker career track after graduating from Princeton. Lots of drama along the way - parental abuse, homelessness, eviction, casual sex, abortion, unplanned pregnancy, miscarriage, adultery, infidelity, gambling, credit card debt etc, etc. Basically it's an indictment of the fast track lifestyle of the stereotypical Manhattanite who works hard, plays hard & makes & spends lots of money. Every character is flawed to some extent - even the virtuous fail through being too long suffering. The author loves Middlemarch by George Eliot & the main character reads & rereads this book in the novel. However, I am a big fan of Eliot's work & this fails to live up to that lofty standard. It is an entertaining book & gives an interesting insight into the experience of some Korean families, starting with the tragedy of a divided country, immigration, hard work with varying success & the keeping of old traditions in a new country. There is even a significant church episode involving the mother & a new choir director. Enjoyable, soap opera like, but with greater depth. You really do care when various characters finally work out what they want & try to live their lives accordingly. The need for large sums of money drives everything!

Finished! It's a good review of the basics of natural science--another one of those books that helps you bone up on what you should have learned in college but didn't or maybe did but forgot. It's fairly accessible. There's plenty of humor, although I found that to be often distracting, as if she were trying too hard to make you laugh (and not succeeding nearly enough).

I was such a sucker for anything magical to happen to my odd childhood that I believed this book to be true. I honestly tried to look at beautiful living things but could not muster anything close to what the book described. In retrospect, the book can bring hope to the most lonely of souls, but it sure took a long time for the main character, a social worker, to "get it."

I disliked this book. While I was reading it ( as far as I could get in it) , I kept thinking it was very poorly written. I just could NOT get interested in it, the characters were silly, and the writing had no depth. So, so, so not as good as the cover makes it look! I eventually had to quit, I just couldn't take the triteness anymore.
