I only read it to satisfy my Geisha fetish. It was like I expected it: entertaining. Not exactly a page turner but sufficently exciting to keep you reading if you have a lot of spare time. I think I also saw the film. But I can't remember.

I went off fantasy literature a while ago, but when it is as well told and well crafted as this, I can make exceptions. On one level American Gods is a modern reworking of an epic that combines a number of legends and mythologies. At another level, the work employs these legends to explore notions of commitment, faithfulness, honour, duty and modern society all through Gaiman's slightly quick-witted and wry world view. At the very final level, the novel shows that these myths are nothing more than stories - which does not mean Gaiman tries to discredit them but more to put them in their place. Gods and heroes are in the end there for our amusement.

I enjoyed reading this book since I work as a nanny. It made me feel very lucky that I have such a wonderful and understanding family. The one thing I didn't like about the book was that the main characters name was Nanny and the family she nannied for were the Xes. It was just very generic and made the book seem less personal. Although I guess it was the point, but the book was all about Nanny being a nanny. We didn't learn anything about her personal life really or her family. She just interacted with them over the phone. So, I guess I thought the book was a little narrow.

Not sure this book works, even on a pseudo-existential level. The end does tie in the disparateness nicely, but surely a long slog on a winters night

Great early 20th century mystery stories. The copy of the book that I have has four short stories in them featuring the no-name detective from the Continental Agency in San Francisco. I enjoyed them, but I think Dashiell Hammett is a little better at longer works; there's just not enough space to really work out the stories. Interestingly, the last story in the book "The Farewell Murder," is roughly the plot of the third movie in The Thin Man series, "Another Thin Man."

This is about the third or fourth Kevin Brooks book that I have read. They are all so delightfully creepy but this one left me sort of cold. I like the book less and less as it went on. The brother's arrival in the village, and the dark, desolate moors and the unwelcoming townsfolk and the whole gypsy thing made it very eerie, but it the end, the book just sort of descended into violence and bloodshed, and there were so many evil henchmen that I could not keep them straight. I was getting tired of descriptions of endless beatings, and a day after I finished it, I can't actually tell you why Rachel was murdered. But I'll read more of his stuff.

Another book that I got for a free first reads.OMG i can't believe I forgot to upload my review!! I thought i did, crap, sorry Ms. Dray. (Who was nice enough to send me swagger with my first read book). I love historical fiction but this book definently goes in my favorites category, I loved all the parts of the book and it just felt real. The plot was spectacular and the characters made me fall in love with them. This book had been sitting in my to-reads pile for a while (because my severlly congested) but for this book i made an exception
