The 1st time I finished reading a book on my Kindle and was able to immediately download the sequel, I was hooked. On the eReader, if not the series. Immediately on finishing the first book, I jumped into this one. The previous book could not have been more clear in my mind. Perhaps that's why it was so aggravating when the author seemed to retell the first book's plot in great detail. With that one caveat, it was a fun read, definitely kept me entertained during my commute. Nothing really new here about the vampires our hero, Mercy, encountered except for how un-lovely and un-seductive they are. A nice change. And they were scary, truly scary, the way vampires should be.

This book inspired a lot of anger in my class when we read, so I don't think many of us appreciated it. However, the situation of a young child starved for his father's affection is an idea that most can understand and relate. I think that in order to understand the beginning, you have to really keep in mind that the speaker is a young child, and at that time in life it's difficult for children to truly empathize or realize that they're not the center of the universe.

A well done memoir of Lucia Greenhouse's childhood and adolescent life within the world of Christian Science and its influence in her adult life. I appreciated gaining a deeper understanding of the world of Christian Science and how confusing the modern world of medicine would be to someone raised in an environment in which illness is portrayed as personal weakness in the belief of perfection of the god created body and soul. In addition I learned of how strong faith in prayer healing guides practitioners of Christian Science to the point of denial of physical manifestations of illness and how that belief can tear apart families when one member is deathly ill and is denied modern medical care. Lucia Greenhouse is refreshingly honest about her approach with this book. She writes this story from her perspective and cautions the reader to realize this is only her point of view.

the best book about about Mafia ever, written by an aussie and, as far as i know, never translated into Italian. Extremely entertaining, a great pageturner. He even has the balls to talk about Andreotti...that's a book Italian journalism should have produced and never did.
well *this* was a surprising disappointment. Better, however, for Nabokov to be the master of the novel rather than the master of the short story.

One of the first "gay" novels I ever read, there's magic in this book, though it's not always apparent why. It has a lost world quality, certainly. AIDS is unknown when it's written and is eerily predicted, "everyone is dying of cancer."
