A good story about friendship and facing your fears set in rural Georgia in the 1970s.

Amelia Atwater-Rhodes is only 21 and has already published seven books. Her first book IN THE FOREST OF THE NIGHT was written when she was only 13. Every one of her books is a treat. Though marketed as Young Adult, there is nothing childish about subject matter or the writing. The lyrical quality and maturity of her writing belies her age or lack of experience. HAWKSONG is the start of a series about shapeshifters. Dancia is an avian shapeshifter, heir to the throne, whose people are at war with the serpiente, snake shapeshifters. The war has gone on so long that no one can remember what caused it. Dancia will do anything to stop any more of those she loves from dying, even if it means sacrificing herself in an attempt to bring peace by mating with Zane, the ruler of the serpiente. Zane is as committed to peace as she is, but by nature they are so different can they ever bridge the gap between them. Zane emotional and easy to anger, a deadly killer whose venom can kill her in an instant. Dancia trained from childhood to be reserved and cold, fragile, whose wings are her only protection. HAWKSONG is a wonderful fantasy novel, rich in imagination, vivid in images, entrancing in its characterization. It certainly well worth reading, even if you are no longer a young adult.

After reading ON BEAUTY these are the following conclusions I have come to:- 1) That all literary recognition & prizes are got up or else this book could not have been shortlisted for the Man Booker. 2) That an author may have written a single piece of good work at some point in his/her career but miracles don't happen everyday! 3) Publishers - Man take your job seriously! 4) Readers - Commendable job if you have managed to finish this one! What a total waste of time the book is. Except an occasional bright part - Carlene & Kiki's friendship & the Belsey children having found a motto in their lives - nothing , absolutely nothing is even close to memorable in this book. The prose is painfully boring & the mixed language will also develop within you a mixed feeling - whether to read or not to read! The book would look good on the store's bookshelf - bring it home and you will have to keep it in the store room!

Herbert pre-Dune. To me, this is a more interesting universe than Dune with a wide variety of aliens populating a universe government structure that include a Bureau of Sabotage. Herbert's book previous to this set in the same universe was Whipping Star. Don't really need the first one before reading the second. And The Dosadi Experiment is better.

Too bad her message was drowned by the stereotypes of the characters. Characters were so badly scarred by political, religious, societal institutions of the day that I found myself asking - what is the point of this book. Kingsolver is a historical revisionist. Read with care and study the area in other sources before making a conclusion. One positive - I did leave more fascinated with Africa and wanting to learn more.

This is what I call popcorn reading. If it were made into a movie, it would be a pg-13, 90 minute episode of Supernatural meets Vampire Diaries with equally appalling actors. I don't understand these 5 star reviews that are praising this book as a breath of fresh air or anything like that. It makes me wonder if I look through some of the shelves of the reviewers will I find five star reviews for Twilight and 50 Shades. It also makes me question the types of books those who are paid to review the book read. Phoenix has no idea what she wants from these characters. They're all one dimensional and really serve no purpose to each other. I'm wondering if she even outlined this mess and bothered to create character biographies. This book is not a secret wonder, breath taking, or a special snowflake by any means. It should be marketed towards 16 year olds who think Twilight is the greatest book ever written. Heather is basically a cave woman with a gun and badge. Every time she opened her mouth all I could hear was "I am cop. I have gun. I have badge. Do what I say." She tried to throw non-existent weight around every moment she could especially in situations where she couldn't. Dante was never in her protective custody but she treated him as such. She had the entire case figured out in mere minutes which was completely laughable seeing as she had been hunting the serial killer for three years. Her backstory is nonexistent except for a mention of a sister (which serves no purpose at all. At least not in this book) and her father who apparently was a shitty father but a great mentor. The story centers around Dante who's backstory is even weaker. Lucian's secret is figured out within moments of meeting him. Time that should have been spent on Joanna and her involvement with Dante an his past should have been fleshed out a great deal more but was left lacking and wanting. If it wasn't for the fact I picked this book up for next to nothing when Borders was closing, I would never have wasted my time on it. Same with books two and three. I'm going to read them because these books can be ripped through in an afternoon. That's how much they can't be taken seriously.

This is the first Jane Austen book I've ever read, but already I can tell why people make those faces like they feel sorry for me when I mention I'm taking an Austen class this summer. This may be an on-the-surface evaluation, but nothing happens! She makes entire chapters out of one look of indifference from a boy and how it makes the heroine of the book FEEL. Don't get me wrong, I can get wrapped up in this because I love reading about the female perspective, and it's especially interesting how much you can relate to a girl from the late 1700s. But even for me the lack of actual plot action gets a little monotonous. Too much contemplation, not enough stuff happening--girls who read this book get enough of that in their own lives! Now it makes a lot of sense why guys don't like reading Austen, either. I haven't finished the book yet, so maybe it will end up impressing me. I will update when I finish. So, it didn't impress me. After taking the full Austen course, I can say Northanger Abbey is just like all the others, but maybe slightly less interesting. You know the heroine and her male counterpart WILL get married in the end, you just don't know how. Usually it involves some comical misunderstanding by the main character that makes you fear they won't end up together, but at the end it was all in her head. As was the entire book. All I have to say is I respect Jane Austen for being sarcastic and funny, especially for her time, but sometimes she takes 5 pages to say what she could say in 5 sentences. Watch the movies--most of them are well done and you get almost as much as you would get out of the books.
