This was recommended to be by a coworker. She told me about the premise and it sounded a little hookey. But she brought her copy of the book in the next day and insisted I read it. I am so glad she did. It's got everything! Violence, history, romance, sex, wars. All genres rolled into one and Gabaldon does a great job telling the story. I hardly ever make it through books that are over 400 pages. This one was easy to knock out though! I will gladly continue to read the series!

Really, really enjoyed this book. It was nice to read a slightly more tame China Mieville. His love and description of the cities he places his characters inside of in his books is fantastic. It's much less 'Weird' than his other books and I found that better suited to my tastes. I have to say - the blurb on the back of the book is really accurate on this one. If your in the mood for a quasi Chandler/Kafka/Dick mash-up - this is a great place to visit.

this was brilliant. i can't explain the five million ways i related to josie, especially with the italian family - even though i am american and things are not the same as australia in the 80s when she wrote this. but still. this touched on so many things: identity, family, naming, growing up, independence, tradition vs. stagnation, friends, loyalty, etc. etc. i will write a more thorough review later, but right now, all i can say is: read this, you won't be sorry. it's so lovely.

Wow... this was decidedly not what I was expecting. The jacket copy led me to expect the typical light-hearted racy Regency (well, post-Regency-- by 1828, Prinny's been on the throne in his own right for 8 years already). In truth, this book is an epic adventure-romance on the order of Georgette Heyer's Beauvallet or something of Rafael Sabatini's. The Marquis of Moreland's dark secrets are dark, indeed-- both parents committed suicide before he was even a teenager (he was the one to discover his father), and he is, with his reclusive grandmother's help, attempting to break free of an addiction to cutting. Painfully aware of his own dark desires (he thinks of himself as a "queer"), he's written his manual on "How to Avoid a Scandal" largely to keep innocent young ladies safe from men like HIM. His mysterious new neighbor, Zosia, is Polish nobility, sent away from her country to find a safely apolitical British husband just as the Tsar of Russia has taken over her home country. She is deeply patriotic, but has little control over her own fate. In London for the summer (and condemned to a convent in France if she fails to wed), she is an amputee (missing one leg), a ward of the King, and a prisoner in her own house. But Zosia is a patriot-- she wants to help her country, and intends to begin by helping herself to a husband of *her* choosing. But there are secrets even Zosia does not know about herself. Their flirtation/courtship begins through the windows-- her bedroom faces his across the square. Before they are done, Moreland will defy his family and his king for love of her, and she will travel to Russia to face the Tsar herself. Truly, this was a worthy read-- I only wish I'd known what I was getting into from the start. Ms. Marvelle, I think you did your heritage proud.

Rothman is part of the ever growing number of writer's who set of on a predetermined venture of which they are paid to write about. This type of story typically works for me because I don't mind living vicariously through writing, these books are typically quite humorous and often I learn something from the vicarious experience. Unfortunately, Rothman's just didn't resonate with me. The venture was too canned, the humor was few and far between, his knowledge and insight was limited.
