Overall, I rather felt "meh" about this book. HOWEVER There are some really hilarious parts and certainly it's interesting to hear about an era one's unfamiliar with. My favorite bit was probably all of chapter 2 in which Bryson discusses how young boys spent their time back then, from knowing everything about their neighborhood in time spent in discovery, to injuries being welcome for the admirers they drew, to all the waiting and watching kids did just in anticipation of something spectacular, and so on. Kids today have no idea how to live like that. Besides, even if they aren't attached to tv/video games, you still can't let your young ones out to discover like back then because it's just a more dangerous world. *sigh* Not for the reader sensitive to language or hearing about the (frequently discussed) fancies of a growing boy...

The first two books in this trilogy are excellent! The third was a little anticlimactic.

I used this book with PK and K when I was doing ABC's at the beginning of the school year. It's a fun read aloud and the kids (and I) loved it.

I haven't been updating recently, and I finished this some time ago. I thought this was a great addition to lineup of female villains parading across my shelves, although Undine Spragg is not quite as resonant a name as Lydia Gwilt (or perhaps, too resonant).

I love this series about a police detective in New York City in 1906. In my mind I am transported to the early 1900s. Pintoff's descriptions are so real and I find the way people lived back then so very interesting. The mystery of who killed the three judges was captivating and descriptions of the anarchists who were organizing and cause mayhem because of working conditions at that time were very interesting too. I want more.

Everyone kept saying that "Los Angeles is the best character" in Janet Fitch's "Paint it Black"; true that with Lethem's latest, as well. I'm a fan of any book in which the spinning happy foot/sad foot sign at the SilverSun intersection works as landmark, metaphor, AND soothsayer, rolled into one.

can't help it...
His characterizations are superb of people exactly caught betwixt their demons, passions, and ideals.
