Helpful in understanding the physiological and chemical changes that take place in your body during meditation practice. I found it comforting to know other people went through similar phases (like the one he called the "creepy crawly heebee jeebees) I was going through and that there was a medical and scientific reason and function behind some of it.

I'm not sure that the rest of the title of this book "The Power of Thinking Without Thinking" really gives the potential reader a good idea of what this book is truly about. i have always been fascinated by the importance and effect of intuition and first impressions, and Malcolm Gladwell does a really great job of giving some interesting examples of where this has come into play, and some good insights into how people can use this thing that they do subconsciously to inform their conscious decisions.

I'm a big fan of Douglas Preston (and his writing partner Lincoln Child) and I really enjoyed this book. Sure, a lot of it was pretty implausible, but to me it was sort of a guilty pleasure and reminded me of a cross between Dan Brown and Michael Crichton. That said, Preston really kept the action moving along at a good clip and and definitely kept me interested from cover to cover.

An enjoyable history of English anecdotes woven around the theme of houses. Describes architecture but is mainly concerned with the functional parts of houses and the history behind their development: windows, stairs, toilets, mousetraps, even wallpaper which was initially made with toxic glue: "Homeowners noticed that bedrooms with green wallpapers usually had no bedbugs." (pp. 314-315) Focused on England, the history spans various eras, venturing back even to pre-history, and gives equal attention to the lifestyles and habits of the richest and poorest classes. Something I learned: in the early 1800s, it was only a misdemeanor (not a felony) to steal a corpse and it was not a crime at all to kidnap a living child. However, in both cases, it was a felony to have stolen the clothes worn by the corpse or the child.
Genuinely charming historical fiction with a spunky girl protagonist and quirky small town surroundings. I liked it a lot. But I wouldn't have given it the Newbery over One Crazy Summer, Out of My Mind or many of the other remarkably good middle grade titles out this past year.

This is a very sharp fictional account of president Teddy Roosevelt's involvement in discovering the identity of a serial killer in the earliest years of criminal profiling. The beginning is a little slow but it's worth the read because the story gains steam and races ahead to a surprising ending.
