The First Xanth Book 22 August 2011 I read this book a very long time ago so my memory of it is very hazy. However, it is unlikely that I will read it again therefore I will write a brief commentary on it. Piers Anthony was one of the more popular authors of young adult fantasy and science-fiction back in the 80's and I suspect that he still writes even today. Apparently this book was going to be made into a film (Hollywood are looking at a lot of books to see if they can capitalise on the Lord of the Rings phenomena, however this book, and in fact this series, comes nowhere close to the Lord of the Rings). Xanth is a magical world appended to our own world (known as Mundania) that is ironically shaped a lot like Florida (maybe because that is where Anthony comes from). In Xanth everybody has a magical talent, except for young Bink, and because he does not have a magical talent he is exiled to Mundania. There is a magical shield that separates Xanth from Mundania so that the mundanes cannot cross over into Xanth, and if a Xanthite (or whatever they are called) crosses over they cannot return). In Mundania Bink encounters Trent, an evil wizard that was exiled from Xanth for trying to usurp the throne, and he also meets a hideously ugly, but incredibly intelligent, woman named Fanchon. However, Fanchon will change depending on the time of the year, to average and then to beautiful and dumb. Fanchon (who is actually Chameleon) considers this power to be a curse and the only way that she can escape it is to flee to Mundania where she will revert to her average form. Some have criticised Anthony on his sexist attitudes in this book. Now, as mentioned, it has been a long time since I have read this book, but in other books that I have read there does tend to be a sexist tinge about it. For instance, in Bio of a Space Tyrant the man character, a male, is constantly commenting on his effect on women. Here, Chameleon is either ugly and smart, or beautiful and stupid. It is suggested that she can't be the other way around, but then again that is her magical talent. Some have suggested that this book is about self-discovery. In a sense yes it probably is as Bink comes to learn about who he is and what his talent is, and also as Chameleon comes to terms with her talent. However it is also about being an outcast. A lot of young adult fantasy is like this, where the main character is a nobody, or even an outcast, and then ends up taking the main role in the story. It can be somewhat deceitful though as we are not always called to be world saving heroes, but it does give us the support in knowing that each an every one of us has a role to play in this world.

The protagonist, Rabbit Angstrom, was unlike any other I have experienced. His behavior consistently surprised me. His pridefulness made it difficult for me to feel compassion for him at times, but I saw enough of myself in him that I couldn't write him off as amoral. John Updike seems to be able to pull off anything convincingly. The passages from the POV of the two women in Rabbit's life were especially good. Those passages reminded me a lot of Ulysses, and they had the same tenderness in the midst of discord that I loved about that book. Despite my doubts about Rabbit, I got really attached to him and I am looking forward to reading the other Angstrom novels.

After seeing a touring production of “Wicked” I was eager to revisit the source material, which I hadn’t read for several years. The things I had loved on first reading were all still there: the clever re-imagining of Oz; the political intrigue and social commentary set against a beloved landscape of my childhood, the friendship between Elphaba and Glinda, the self exile in the Vinkus section. However, the things that made me a little uncomfortable a few years ago now made me extremely uncomfortable, particularly the (admittedly few, but still present) sex scenes. Where does that leave me? The book is really a tour-de-force of imagination and it has obviously had an effect on our cultural landscape. While there are parts of it I adored, I don’t know how to feel about the whole. I’m just maybe too much of a stick in the mud to lose myself in it completely. Recommended for: I don’t know, honestly. Mature fantasy lovers? I would say that Grandmas looking to get a book for the 12 year old who won’t stop singing “Defying Gravity” should maybe not go with this one.

I absolutely loved it! Very rarely do I read a book in less than 24 hours, but this is exactly what happened here. It was clever, suspenceful and incredibly entertaining. The ending was not what I expected, but I was entertained until the very last line, so no complaints there.

I picked this book up for an easy read. I enjoy a nice romance with some intrigue in it and Alias Mommy had just enough. The story starts off with Polly driving on a stormy night. She is on unfamiliar roads and falls asleep behind the wheel. She is discovered and a doctor is called to the scene to help so that she doesn't die. Polly is 8 months pregnant and Dr. Reeve Snyder sees her and has a memory of his own. Polly is hiding something and Reeve is concerned about her. Polly is running away from her family and is afraid for her life and the life of her new baby daughter. She doesn't want to trust anyone because of her past, what she is running away from and being hurt again. This was a nice easy fun read.

Tough bit of reality slamming you in the face. Whew. Luckily it is short and fast paced -- if this had been a longer story, I'm not sure I would have liked it as much. However, the book's brevity was in a way its downfall as well. I never quite connected with any of the characters, I'm guessing because they didn't feel fully three dimensional. The material, as difficult emotionally as it is to absorb, is very important stuff. That's what makes this a worthwhile read.

Dieses Buch ging mir wie so viele andere bei meinem jährlichen Lieblingsbücherflohmarkt ins Netz und auf das Lesen hatte ich mich alleine schon deshalb gefreut, weil ich den Film dazu unheimlich witzig fand. Aber während mich eigentlich eher die Verfilmungen enttäuschen, war hier leider das Gegenteil der Fall. Dabei verspricht der Klapptext einiges: eine sympathische Protagonistin, eine witzige Story und jede Menge Humor. Davon ist mir beim Lesen aber leider nur wenig begegnet. Angefangen hat das mit Bridget Jones selbst, mit der ich leider überhaupt nicht warm wurde. Ich könnte mir vorstellen, dass Frau Fielding ihren Charakter nach der Strategie "Sind wir nicht alle ein bisschen Bridget?" entworfen hat. Dabei wollte sie aber derart auf Nummer sicher gehen, dass sie ihr wirklich jede "typisch weibliche" Macke verpasst hat, die ihr in den Sinn gekommen ist. Aber wie soll ich eine Frau ernst nehmen, die sich mit 66,4kg als Fettberg bezeichnet und trotzdem im knappen Lack-Mini zur Arbeit geht? Also habe ich versucht, sie als das zu nehmen, was sie vielleicht auch sein sollte: übertrieben, überzeichnet und witzig. Leider wollte auch dieser Funke nicht überspringen. Ob es an der Übersetzung liegt, oder Frau Fielding wirklich so schreibt, weiß ich nicht. Aber mir war ihr Stil viel zu gekünstelt und hat bei Bridget jeden im Ansatz vielleicht noch vorhandenen Reiz im Keim erstickt. In ihrem (vergeblichen) Bemühen für Lacher zu sorgen, hat die Autorin es meiner Meinung nach versäumt, erst einmal für ein stabiles Grundgerüst zu sorgen: die Charaktere sind allesamt flach, eine Story ist praktisch nicht vorhanden und wenn Bridget nicht gerade Zigaretten oder Kalorien zählt, suhlt sie sich in Selbstmitleid. Was im Film großartig funktioniert, ging hier für mich leider komplett schief. Hier verzaubert keine Renée Zellweger, hier gibt es nur Bridget und die trägt die Geschichte leider nicht. Oder viel mehr trägt sie die Ansammlung von nur selten zusammenhängenden Szenen nicht. Etwas ist ausgereizt oder entwickelt sich nicht richtig weiter? Kein Problem! Schreiben wir einfach ohne Übergang über etwas völlig Anderes und ignorieren gekonnt, dass es da eigentlich noch ein paar lose Fäden gibt. So konnten mich leider weder Handlung, noch Charaktere überzeugen. Dass ich die meisten Lacher beim Lesen des Klapptextes hatte, dürfte bezeichnend sein... Wem die Person Bridget und der Stil liegen, der könnte an diesem Buch durchaus Gefallen finden. Bei mir war das leider nicht der Fall und von sehr spärlich gestreutem Witz abgesehen, war das Ganze eine rießige Enttäuschung. Fazit: Kompliment an Renée Zellweger und das Filmteam, die aus 352 Seiten seichter Lesequal beste Unterhaltung gemacht haben.
