Evie's family shrinks from four - Dad, Mom, Evie and Mousse the dog - to only Evie and her mother. Eventually, however it expands to include Dad, Angie (her stepmother), elderly Mrs. Hamilton next door and few little surprises as well. Evie takes after her father who is a celebrity chef. She loves to cook and since Mom doesn't that leaves Evie free to experiment in the kitchen. Each chapter concludes with a recipe, many of which kids will want to try for themselves. This is an enjoyable quick read about a young teen coping with the divorce of her parents as well as the remarriage of her father.

I enjoyed reading this story about 11-year-old Roz, whose mom relocates her, her brother, and her baby sister to a small town to get away from her drunken, abusive father in the 1960's. Although she knows her dad was frightening at times, Roz wants to remember all the good things he did for her and hopes one day her family can be together and whole again. Tillie is an eccentric, elderly woman who makes herself at home with Roz and her family shortly after they arrive in town, and even though she's a little odd, they soon find she's just who they need in their lives. Then there's Mara Nightingale, a friend from school who befriends Roz. As their friendship grows they share everything with each other, including their deepest secrets. They make a pinky-swear promise to one another that they will pray for each other, that God will make both of their greatest desires come to pass one day. Ann Tatlock is a new author to me, but I will enjoy reading more of her books. This story held my attention and had my interest from the first page. It was a fast-paced read and hard to put down. I would've enjoyed the book even more if the faith aspect had been stronger. It was rather weak for my personal taste, but I still highly recommend it for the plot and storytelling. I appreciate Bethany House Publishers for sending me a free copy for review. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions expressed here are my own.

I really don't know how I plugged through this book. It wasn't an easy journey, but I made it through! The story follows Meg and John. Meg is written as a rebel (she has blue hair and the author makes sure you know about said blue hair about a million times) who finds herself doing a week's worth of ride-alongs with a cop, John, because of some illegal activity. John is a 19 year old cop who has his own issues that are tying him to his podunk town. Meg just wants to escape, but when these two unlikely people start to fall in love, fireworks (both good and bad) occur. The story was full of holes, especially about the characters. They were inconsistent and a lot of things didn't make sense (like how Meg was written as a rebel but was actually a good girl...her character never made sense to me). The story was predictable yet there were a lot of necessary components.

This was the first of the Holly Barker series I've read (appropriately as it is the first in the series). Most of the books I've read of Stuart Woods' is the Stone Barrington series. I really enjoyed this book and it was nice to get to know a new character. I look forward to reading more in this series.

this is really a 3.5 read for me. Murdock is the worst hero of the lot. I hate rakes/slores. Murdock didn't have a romantic bone in his body for his bride.
This book was ok. I just wish that the action didn't all occur in one chapter and then it was over. It could have been a really great novel with the story it told.

I opened this book for the first time - one of the few Steinbeck novels I had not yet read - shortly after completing my own first attempt at writing a novel. The little book is one of Steinbeck's earliest published works and, interestingly enough, the one that took him the longest to complete. It was in this context that I found the book most provoking: myself an aspiring writer, it was interesting to witness part of the development of one of my favorite novelists. Although not yet as strong and defined as in his later works, the classic Steinbeck tone is still there, and, of course, it is set against the oft-revisited setting of the fertile farmlands of Central California. What prevents me from giving this book a higher rating is that, in the scope of Steinbeck's literary career, it is not very impressive. The characters do not gel together as flawlessly as those in most of his later works and the classical allusions to parallel stories and characters in the Bible are a bit shaky and somewhat inconsistent. Nevertheless, what prevents me from giving this book a lower rating is that it remains a thoughtful, intriguing, and insightful piece on the nature of man's relationship to the land and to God. Overall, it is certainly a worthwhile read. In both its length and the complexity of its symbolism, To a God Unknown is certainly more accessible than Steinbeck's more celebrated longer works, such as The Grapes of Wrath or East of Eden, but it is in no way a comprehensive sample of Steinbeck's essential style and literary voice.
This is my daughter's favorite book! I think we've read it at least a hundred times. :)
