I have only made it through five or six Surahs, and those were when I was in Diwaniyah. So I have filed this away for future reading as something to return to and start anew.

Love is blind--Eventhough the plot is contrived, the repartee among the characters is really fun. I love the battle of the sexes theme. A fun read.

This was so good. It was almost like two short stories. The first third of the book was Adam and Mercy's wedding and honeymoon. The last half was Mercy and Adam fighting a river devil causing trouble in the river they were honeymooning next to. I loved the wedding and honeymoon. It felt like a gift to me as a reader and fan to see Mercy and Adam learning to be married to each other. The adventure with the river devil was good. Part of it was Mercy learning about her father's side of the family. I don't know that this was a book that moved the series along that much. I also think it's enjoyable because I know the series well; I don't think it would be as good to someone who started the series with this book. It was a good read, though.

Two very dim people get together when a little girl asks Santa for a mommy. The plot isn't too bad, but it is sickeningly sweet and profoundly so, with an overwhelming air of Hallmark Movie Channel. Kleypas' writing style of using ellipses every third paragraph† grated on me to such extent that I've made note to avoid her books in the future. The Washington-state setting was vivid, however, and I did enjoy visualizing the area. DNF of one and half stars; bumped up to two because I'm feeling generous. † Page 105–106, ISBN 9780312605865: A count of five ellipses and an em dash.
Surprisingly well written. I was shocked by how much I enjoyed this book. The author has a very original way of writing dialog. His voice reminds me of the perks of wall flowers for adults.

This graphic novel biography presents one of Houdini's most famous escapes -- jumping, handcuffed, off the Harvard Bridge into the freezing Charles River -- and a theory of how it was done. The grayscale pictures are very fitting, and the artwork reminds me of Persepolis. Nick Bertozzi really captures Houdini's glowering looks, dark brows, and famously parted black hair. He also does some nice things with empty white space (and, in the case of the underwater scenes, black space). The only criticism I have of the art is that Bess seems to be perpetually wearing the same expression. But then again, when you read how she was one of Houdini's few trusted accomplices, maybe that makes sense. Who'd suspect the silly, pretty wife? The underwater scene is heart-poundingly drawn out in a way that is hard to do with prose, but the silent, cinematic pictures force you to experience the minute as slowly as Houdini. Both the intro and the end notes provide some fascinating insight into Houdini's life and times (he was obsessed with fame and self-promotion; he said "anyone could do what I do if they worked hard enough"; there were no sound systems or microphones; etc.). This would be good paired with Escape! by Sid Fleischman.
