While a wonderful work, the third installment of the Chronicles of Narnia reads as a pale immitation of the first. The episodic narrative maintains a good clip, Eustace is satsifactorily delivered from himself (in Edmund fashion), and the ending sequence is sufficiently dreamy-cum-dippy to satisfy Lewis's fans and evoke the superior Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.

Really hard to get into, but in the end it's a good book. About Henry II's reign.

I don't usually read religious books or non-fiction, but I am so glad my book club added The Price We Paid to our list this year. Andrew D. Olsen did an incredible amount of research for this book, using journals to tell the true, personal stories of dozens of the pioneers. It is a heartbreaking story wrought with several important spiritual and philosophical questions. I did not care too much for Olsen's style of writing but, as mentioned before, I'm not really one for non-fiction. I do, however, think this is a book every Mormon should read and a history that should not be forgotten.

Great read, very fast paced and interesting. I am not sure why a lot of Christians were so up in arms about the book. The leaps that Dan Brown makes are pretty unbelievable but make for a great story. The book only purports that the groups and practices are true, not the content of their beliefs. He first stated, not in the book but in interviews, that it was just a good story loosely based on Opus Dei and the Knights of Templar, he later said that everything the book purports is actually true, including that Jesus was married to Mary and had children -- but I think that was just to sell more books; quite the capitalist.

Really a 4.5, but I'm stingy with my 5's. An entertaining and informative look at the early history of forensic toxicology, centered on two smart and hardworking men in the NYC Medical Examiner's Dept. Plenty of true tales of murder kept it more entertaining. My only quibbles: the author likes to keep two or three stories going at once, and repeatedly jumps from one to another, for no apparent (at least to me) reason, and it disrupts the flow--maybe she figures too much science at once will bore readers, so she keeps you waiting for the tales of murder (or not) to play out? And personally, I would have liked a little more of the scientific history. Reading this, you'd think that the entire history of forensic toxicology took place in NYC.

I'd really give this one a 3.5, because I didn't feel the recipes were of particular use to me unless I had an awesome garden, but it was incredibly inspiring and encouraging in creating such a garden. I blame Jamie Oliver for tapping into my latent desire for an herb garden and making it, somewhat, a reality. He's also inspired me to keep chickens someday. Look out!

This book is kind of a cross between the Killer Critter brand of horror that was popular in the 1950's, and post-apocalyptic fiction, which still seems to be popular today. It's a rather strange book, and the idea of murderous plants as the major threat is a little bit more silly, on the surface, than frightening. But Triffids succeeds at being creepy, even so.

I am in awe of people like Dr Chi--sacrificing everything to bring medical care to the street children of Bolivia. It was awful to learn of the lives of these kids, but I'm glad I read this book. I finished grateful and inspired.
I had a hard time deciding between two and three stars. It was not an uplifting book. It was easy to read. The whole family in this book were dysfunctional!
