ORIGINALLY POSTED AT Fantasy Literature. First, let me say that I don't like romance novels and I didn't realize when I picked this one up that it was a romance. If you like romance novels, you can add a hypothetical star to my 2 stars. Actually, the story was pretty good for a romance. The writing was lively and active, the characters were interesting, deep, and well-done. Ms. Vaughan has a way of making them come alive with well-described mannerisms and facial expressions. The main female character is feisty and likable, the main male character is a barbarian warlord (how hot is that?). The story was interesting though it didn't have many fantasy elements. I suppose we call this "low fantasy," but my speculation is that some romance authors call their work fantasy so they can use a completely made up world which requires very little historical research. (I'm not accusing Ms. Vaughan of this in particular, it's just an aside.) But now I know what it is I don't like about romance novels. It's not that I don't like romance. I DO like romance, I consider myself a fairly romantic person, and I like romantic sub-plots in my fantasy -- they aid characterization and help us to empathize. What I DON'T like is that romance novels all have the same goal. We're just waiting... and building tension... and getting all hot and bothered... until finally... The hero and heroine hit the hay. It's always the same climax. (Sorry for the bad pun, but I hope you appreciated the alliteration). In a romance novel, the romance is the main plot (I guess that's why they call it a romance novel, eh?) and everything is written around it just to provide a context for the physical relationship. So, as a rule, romance novels are not known for being excellent literature, and this novel doesn't break the rule. But it does break several grammar rules, and elementary ones, too. For example: Incorrect usage: "But experience had been a hard teacher, harder then Eln had ever been." "His broad, round face was grim, and while not as dark as the man on the cot, he was darker then most." "The expressions ran the gauntlet from pity to amazement to mirth." Run-on sentences: "It was early enough the market was not crowded." "The tent seemed to glow it was so bright." Verb tense changes: "After I passed Anna's inspection, and been given a quick hug,..." There are other issues: spelling errors, pronouns missing their direct objects, possessives missing apostrophes... I could go on, but I won't. (You're welcome.) No matter how high-spirited the heroine, or how hunky the hero, I can not forgive these sorts of mistakes. They are too distracting and it's inexcusable. How does it happen that a published author doesn't know basic fourth grade grammar? Perhaps the mistakes are just typing errors, but why didn't Tor's editors catch them?? Unbelievable! SHAME ON YOU, TOR! I will not be reading any more Tor romances. Read this review in context at Fantasy Literature

I wasn't expecting to like this book. It was one of two books up for this month to read for a group I recently joined, and neither one of them sounded that interesting. But I chose this one because I preferred the cover. Yeah, yeah... From the description, I thought it would be preachy and moralistic and ... you know, one of those books with an agenda where the actual story is secondary. But that is totally not the case. This book is very well written and makes excellent use of the dual narrator technique, switching back and forth between Lavinia, who is young, innocent and naive, and Belle, who is older and hasn't been spared the tragedies of the world. To Belle, it is obvious that the biggest difference between the two of them is that Belle is half black and a slave, whereas Lavinia is white and an indentured servant who ended up that way as an orphan. Lavinia doesn't realize that different colors mean anything (having grown up to the ripe old age of 7 in Ireland, she was presumably spared the brainwashing), and she views Belle (and the other slaves) as her family. Lavinia is often spared the truth to save her innocence. When she asks questions about things happening around her, people often reply that she will find out soon enough, and don't explain. But she never does figure it out on her own, and the lack of knowledge leads her to make some decisions that change everyone's lives forever. To be honest, most of the things in this book are caused because people refuse to be honest with each other, or don't push the issue and tell things that need to be told. (view spoiler) There are other cases of this as well, but these are the big plot-important ones. In the end, I found all the characters to be likable at some point during the book (well, except Rankin and the tutor...) and even felt a little bad for Marshall, although I have to admit I am REALLY unclear about his motives for his choice of wife. He had SEEN how she interacted with everyone in the past - did he really expect this to change? Some parts of the book were really, really awful, and brought up strong emotions with me. Lots of violence, often of a sexual nature (but not always). There was an awful lot of death. I'm impressed with the author's research, especially dealing with current events in the time period, and I enjoyed reading the different dialects. Definitely recommend reading this one at least once.

Bought from Amazon, and I still own a copy. APART OF THE GOODREADS 2012 READING CHALLENGE. Review/Rating: 5 out of 5 Ease of Reading Text: 5 out of 5 Illustrations: 5 out of 5 Plot: 5 out of 5 Art Touch-Up: 5 out of 5 Translation: 5 out of 5 Design: 5 out of 5 Rena, a high school student, has a secret she keeps from almost everybody at school. However, when Tomoya finds out she’s a professional mangaka, she asks him out in order to improve her love scenes. But what will happen when she actually falls in love with Tomoya? Side Story 1: Tomoya Okita: A Boy Like in the Comics: We all know that Tomoya is love with Rena, but how was he before having Rena? Was he always the shoujo bishie we all know? Side Story 2: Magical Project: Debut manga of Chitose Yagami. Yuzu is currently going to magic school, but she is not any good at any of the spells. So, when she has to change her pet, Ro, into a human, she tries her hardest. However, he can only change if both of them want it. This manga and the second volume to this series are the only ones I own by Chitose Yagami, and I have to say that I really love them. The artwork looks so amazing. I love how the manga-ka drew the characters (especially Tomoya) and the romance scenes. The kiss scenes looked very yummy and good. And for the Magic Project side story, Yuzu reminds me of Sakura from Card Captor Sakura. xD However, the plot is very cliche in shoujo manga, but I still think it is pretty sweet. I usually like my manga with a lot of romance, kiss scenes, and/or smutty scenes; and this manga has most of that in it. Though because of this, it makes it hard to do a review on shoujo manga, since you can’t say too much or you will ruin everything for people. Anyways, I like how Tomoya teases Rena. It’s so cute since Rena usually “melts”. The characters are all pretty funny and energetic, but sometimes it is kind of annoying — not enough to stop reading though. Overall, pretty much a simple and predictable manga, but it is still pretty good. ;) The side stories were also kind of cute; and I also love the freetalks since they gave tips on how to make manga. :D Now for how VIZ did with bringing this manga into English. VIZ did an excellent job on this one, I hardly have any complaints. The only one is the translation for the “squueee” SFX. ;)
