Wow. I am reeling after finishing this powerful book. Kingsolver has given us an amazing account of a history that most European Americans (most Americans?) hardly know anything about, while intimately portraying the inner experience of a wide array of typical white European and American views of African culture, and the experience of whiteness itself as it plays out in the world. Poisonwood Bible and its characters brought me deep into the realities of the ways that I embody, experience, enact and react to ignorance, privilege, colonialism, forgiveness. Having actually lived in Africa 20 years ago and come face to face with the stark, painful realization of my complete ignorance as a young, white american, this book spoke to the memory of that experience and also deepened that learning somehow, showing me some ways these themes still play out in my life. I know this book will continue to have an impact on me for a long time to come.

The movie's better. And that's OK for me to say since Shaffer did the screenplay for it.

There are three things which make a book interesting for me - that can't put it down/keep me interested feeling, characters who seem to come alive and create a bond, and an ending which leaves me wishing it wasn't over. Christie Anderson hits the mark on all three. Deep Blue Secret is playful, fun, youthful, and mysterious. While it teases us with other world glimpses, it remains down to earth. Sadie is a sweetheart and Rayne is the man of a young girl's dream. As the parent of a young girl, I appreciated the approach Christie took with some of the challenges facing Sadie and her friends. She pulls this off without overburdening the story with a preachy feeling. Thanks Christie for introducing us to your characters, letting us connect with them, and for creating that anticipation for what is to come. While I look forward to the next book, I'll be both comfortable and happy to share this one with my daughter.

Even Willa Cather's final stories, written in the mid-1940s, seem really old-fashioned. That's not a criticism; I think her conventionality is absolutely charming. Perhaps "conventionality" is the wrong word, but I also don't think she was particularly experimental or anything. "The Old Beauty" and "The Best Years" are both excellent, while "Before Breakfast" is merely okay. I just didn't care about the character, and the story had no twists. I couldn't possibly toss either of those criticisms at "The Old Beauty" or "The Best Years," both of which seemed like compressed Cather novels, with all the strengths I've come to expect from her best work. "The Best Years," in particular, was up to Cather's usual prairie-story standards. Having never previously read any of Cather's short fiction (although My Mortal Enemy was certainly brief), I was pleased to find that these stories were just as good as her novels. And I never really expected to like Willa Cather as much as I do.

Though seemingly juvenile because of its themes dealing with adolescence, Great Expectations is a fabulous bildgungsroman (novel tracing the life-thank you wikipedia) dealing with the psychology of our influences. Easily relatable, fascinatingly funny, and dangerously close to home, GE is easily Dickens’s most accessible and necessary read. Though not sure why everyone thinks is such a romance...

Really, it's not good enough to have sold 40 Million copies. It was alright, but not that good at all. Angels & Demons was the better book.

This was a fantastic resource when it came out, and really brings together the available Christian writings of the 2nd (and potentially late 1st) century. However, both the translation and the attendant author/date notes are now quite dated. Much better translations of all the writings in this text can now be found in other publications, and our knowledge of the original authors has grown so much in the last century as to make these notes obsolete. Still, I highly recommend hunting down all of the writings in this book in some form if you have the slightest interest in early Christian history. There is a lot of really good stuff in here.

This was the first book in a long time that I stayed up late to finish... really powerful. It succeeds where Chopin's "The Awakening" (similar in setting, characters) fails. Simply a beautiful book.

A very challenging book...but well written. You might have to do a little research on the Jewish faith in order to be better able to understand some sections of the book. LOVED, LOVED, LOVED this story!

I really had no idea what to expect from this story. Certainly not the violence. But I have to say I loved it. It would have gotten 5 stars but Mr. Butcher just had to put in a widowed man now involved with a young woman. Apparently it doesn't matter to me what type of story I am reading, I just do not like that type of storyline. Even if it is a sideline to the main story, which I loved. Tavi is now one of my favorite characters. I will be starting book two in the morning.
