Well, I was again on my task of reading plays that might be good for the male prisoners to do at Washington State Penitentiary...since they refuse to do Shakespeare...and I'm not quite sure that 8 weeks of rehearsal only three days a week will be enough to pull off a Shakespeare with non-actors, but it's a moot issue because they don't want to...but anyway, finding all men plays for larger casts is difficult. This is one that I found in my research and it's wonderful. My boyfriend tells me that the monologues are well known by his sex, but I had never heard any of them, nor had I heard of the play. I'm not surprised that there is a male version of A PIECE OF MY HEART, but...anyway, it is good. I also think that there should be remounts of this production right now. I have taught a lot of guys who have come back from Iraq or Afghanistan and I think this would help them feel not so alone. That there are generations of guys who come home from war and don't understand how there are supposed to rationalize the feelings that they feel after committing acts of war. It's a complicated feeling, which I don't think I could ever fully empathize with, but...it's worth it to bring that feeling to light. I read recently that theater is the place where ambivalent and ambiguous feelings are sussed out...I'm paraphrasing O'Neill, but...I think that is what happens scene by scene and play by play...we are just trying to make sense of the human experience....alright enough babbling... The play has an episodic structure, many monologues, a great soundtrack (which you would need the rights for), and lots of fun research opportunities, including pigeon/slang Vietnamese. Anyway, it's worth it.

I thought this was a fun book. It was a pretty funny take on the first six months of being a new mother.

This is one of the best non-fiction books I have read recently. Although you might think the history of the screw and screwdriver would be fascinating, this book dabbles into a variety of fields making the history of innovation exciting and accessible for those of us who are not engineers.

This book is sometimes harsh, but always practical about what fiction is and isn't, and how to write it well. It takes you from the broadest points of fiction to the small points of grammar and diction, with examples along the way. I'd like to hand a copy of it to every beginning writer. I don't like craft books (books on 'how to write') as a rule, but this one is well worth reading.

This book was hard to read because it was gross. The good things about it are the writer did a good job describing the people in the book. You always knew who was who and you did care about them. It was a rural setting and the decription of the interactions with the people of the small town was true to life.* SPOILER ALERT*I do like the way that he decribed the mental health issues involved and his feelings about taking his meds.

Yay puns! Oh what to say about this amazing book? The characters are unique enough. The story, while it'd be decent enough by itself, is enhanced by all the puns. The various types of puns are actually punny. I can't say anything without spoiling something. This book is like Heavy Rain (wow, talk about completely different :P) in that even giving an example spoils the experience of seeing it firsthand. The Good: Puns. Can you believe that the editor originally wanted to remove all the puns? Talk about not getting the point :P. The Bad: I can't find a way to describe it perfectly, though that might be a cheat. Warnings: If you don't like puns, don't read it. If you like or can tolerate puns, read it. It's a masterpiece. If you don't, it's a shame.

After having read all the other books out loud in June (see my review of the first book to make sense of the rest of this), we were anxiously awaiting the sixth book. And in fact, we pre-ordered it and had it all planned to arrive via general delivery at a post office in Eugene, OR, at the time we thought we might get there. Only then we arrived several days early, and ended up attending a midnight release party at the U. of Oregon bookstore. We broke down and bought a copy, and then spent several hours in the early morning driving through southern Oregon and reading (proving that our headlamps were perhaps the most useful gifts we received for the trip). Even better was when, a month or so later, the post office sent back our ordered copy and we received a refund from Amazon. Sometimes haste does not make waste.
