WOW was my reaction to John Hart's novel Down River. I found myself reading this book when I should have been doing my job and cleaning the house. I just couldn't put the book down. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time that I read this book. Down River is a mystery book that is different then what I have read in the past. The main character, Adam Chase was acquitted 5 years ago for a murder he did not commit. Adam is exiled by his family and the population of Rowan County after his acquittal and he doesn't want to go back when he receives a call from one of his friends, Danny Faith asking him to come back. Adam had pushed his past out of his head until he received that call from Danny, begging him to come back. Adams return is one filled with many different emotions. Some people have missed him and are happy yet angry to see him back in town. No sooner is Adam in town and dead bodies start showing up again so everyone begins to ponder what is happening again in their town. Everyone believes Adam is the one who has committed the murders. The cops, judges and even some family members think he is responsible for the past murder and the new ones that happen in Down River. The twists and turns in the pages of this story kept me trying to figure out who was the murderer. I have to admit that I would read a chapter and then try to figure out who dunnit. I was pleasantly surprised by the actual ending and will be thinking about this book for awhile. Looking for a wonderful mystery to read then I recommend Down River by John Hart!!

My favorite out of the whole Space Trilogy. More plot rich and it takes place on earth making it a bit more relatable to readers. The wicked characters of the N.I.C.E are fantastically evil and while I'm not entirely sure I agree with the ultimate struggle between "science" and "nature" he raises intriguing ideas about both, and his plot mirrors what as been done in the name of these ideas.

Hitchens and Wilson bounce off each other as in most debates of this type. Hitchens makes points that Wilson does not rebuff, and Wilson's searching questions are continually ignored by his opponent. This is an absurdly brief treatment of an absurdly weighty subject, and thus I am not convinced it was a useful exercise for either side. The documentary "Collision," which features Hitchens and Wilson and much of the same material, is much more cogent, interesting, and well-executed.

It is such a great pleasure to have read this book, to have known the character - a mere little girl - who, given her circumstances, would have been a spoiled brat. Being a rich little thing, however, doesn't mean that you have the right to be mean to other people, and that's just the right attitude Sara Crew has. Being pampered too much also does not alter her kindness and thoughtfulness of others. I wish there are more fictional characters like Sara, for others to look up to. Although up to a certain extent all the qualities seem to be too good to be true, and almost impossible to be adapted by young children, would it harm anyone to have such a perfect model? I love The Secret Garden, but I love A Little Princess a little bit more!

she was an amazing lady!
Now I remember why I loved this book. I don't know why it took me years to re-read it. Although the ending felt moderately abrupt and overdramatic, I guess one could say it ties in with the desperation the students felt after a semester with Sorbeck--he unleashed emotions they weren't prepared to deal with because, essentially, they were kids and he was the closest concept to a mentor they had. I often despised Hims/Mils and couldn't get why the narrator doted so much on her. A big plus for Chip Kidd? He made a lovestruck freshman, in love with a self-involved art student, seem completely believable--he was never spineless or wimpy. He wasn't one-dimensional, and he was certainly flawed, but I felt such affection for him, a rarity when you read a first-person POV. The best segments, by far, were the interactions between Sorbeck and his students. I wish there were more of them.
