Recommended for kids who also liked Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451. A neat book that seems especially to appeal to reluctant boy readers, about censorship and freedom in the future.

One of the best collections of American short stories, even if many of them are technically science-fiction. They still have a deeper sense of the struggles of humanity, regardless of setting - which, perhaps, is that makes them even more powerful and hammers the point even deeper.

Awakened was like any other House of Night book but with a different plot. I'm not sure why I continue to read the series but I'm guessing it has to do with the drama that has kept me glued to every page. Awakened continues after Zoey's soul is returned to her body and is temporarily taking sanctuary at Skye with Sgiach. As Neferet discovers that Kalona didn't fulfill his duty, she begins to go back to planning on how to get rid of Zoey Redbird. This was just a very simple and easy read. It's not one of my favorites but it was enjoyable. Of course there were still some relationship dramas and many more surprise deaths. *Minor Spoilers* I did feel like the characters no longer had use besides fueling Zoey's hatred for Neferet and felt as though their deaths happened too fast. I know that sounds pretty strange but if you've already read it, it was only like a paragraph. (Exaggeration) The writing for this book was very easy, but I did feel like there was an over usage of the word love. It was used so often that the feelings don't get across to me anymore and couldn't fully comprehend how much they actually cared about each other. Overall this was a fun easy read and would recommend this to anyone who's looking for a drama filled book.

I picked up this book to read on a 15 hour flight from Chicago to Vietnam, on the assumption that it would be a light, pleasant way to pass the dreary hours (after one flight to China during which I watched the first X-Men film three times, I decided it was best to err on the side of having too many books rather than too few). My assumptions proved correct, and I enjoyed the book quite thoroughly. Three things struck me: 1) Pratchett's use of language is always fun, and he occasionally makes wonderful jokes that can't be read aloud with the same effect, like the store owner who turns up whose speech suffers from greengrocer's apostrophes. 2) Pratchett typically writes in a third person limited point of view, but he's extremely good at getting inside the heads of his characters and changing the voice up. The unfortunately named Moist has his own clear-eyed perspective on the world that differs from the other denizens of Discworld. 3) He manages to weave in quite a bit of history about the postal service. I wouldn't have considered it to be an interesting topic for inquiry (I mean, come on; post offices mostly exist to aggrivate people who hate standing in queues, right?) but I was wrong. Best vocabulary word gleaned from the text: "frank", meaning to stamp something.

Witchblade started out strong, when Marc Silvestri was at the helm. After he left, things start to slide and the story/mythology became lackluster and muddled. Still, Sara Pezzini is a great character, and it's worth reading the earlier issues.

It's the late 1930s (1938?), and English narrator Marlow has just lost his job as a factory production manager. Eager for employment (he is engaged to be married), he applies for and accepts an unlikely position: to serve as the Milan representative of an English armaments manufacturer. Having just entered into the Axis alliance with Nazi Germany, Italy is a hotbed of espionage, and Marlow, because of his access to Italian weapons factories, immediately attracts the attentions of various spies as well as the Italian secret police. Marlow is a likeable narrator and a competent engineer, but he doesn't know the first thing about spycraft, and he's prone to impulsive decisions as well, so he soon gets himself into some trouble. As the plot thickens and the tension builds, we worry that Marlow may meet the same fate as his predecessor, who was the victim of a vehicular manslaughter (which we see in a brief prologue). Typical of Ambler, this book has engaging and memorable characters and a vivid setting, and the pacing carries us along quickly -- at times, pulse-poundingly. But overall it falls one star short of perfect because it relies too heavily on dialogue: too much of the story is related to us through conversations between characters, too little actually shown to us through action. But overall it is a very solid espionage tale set (and written) on the eve of World War II.
