There is a lot going on here. Set mostly in 1799-1800, in an exotic Far East setting, this story contains a multicultural cast of characters, economic and political intrigue, nefarious business dealings, a mysterious mountain shrine, an evil abbot, thwarted love, and so much more. At the center of it all is Jacob De Zoet, a young clerk working for the Dutch East Indies Company in a trading “factory” outside of Nagasaki, an honorable man just trying navigate the mysterious ways of the isolated Japanese culture and to do the right things amidst oceans of corruption and constant danger from the serious consequences of taking a false step. I especially loved the stories-within-the-story that occur throughout the book. Many of his characters relate strange and wonderful anecdotes about their lives prior to the present action that are windows into vastly different worlds, often harsh and brutal worlds. Mitchell paints very vivid pictures, often through a unique technique that intersperses one- line descriptions of the surroundings with one-liners of action or dialogue. It took a little getting used to, but was ultimately effective in providing me with the sensory impressions the POV characters themselves would be experiencing. Mitchell displays the same talent for different styles that he did in Cloud Atlas, although here it is through the voices of many different characters, each of whom has their own personality and dialect. All of the writing is really beautiful and descriptive, even poetic. Enjoyed this book quite a bit, although not quite as much as Cloud Atlas.
