Better than the first in series. Theology is more thought provoking than the Narnia series. Narnia is way more entertaining, but these stories have a different level of scope/depth. I prefer Narnia. I like sci-fi, but some of this seems forced. Still thinking on this one....

Liked it because it's Joanne Harris and she writes beautifully but I can't say I enjoyed the format. Very confusing, which was the point, but I do like to have some sort of idea what's actually going on. I'm also bad at reading chapter headings which made it more confusing - working out what was meant to be fiction and what was meant to be 'real' - too much! But I finished it anyway!

3 short bizzaro fiction stories all centered on greed of various sorts. Not the best in the genre.

** spoiler alert ** It's more somewhere between a 3.5 and a 4 star for me. still great action, but I think the plot and the feeling that I'm progressing in figuring out what this is all about was not as prominent as in the first book. Can't wait to get some actual answers in the next book, if i can manage to get to the top of the hold list!

This book was a lot better than I was expecting. As I was reading it, I was thinking that I wasn't going to like it. I'm surprised with how engrossing the story was, it was moderately paced but I found myself eagerly anticipating the outcome. The basic plot is that the wife of a pilot learns that her husband's plane has exploded off the coast of Ireland and that there are no survivors. While dealing with all the initial shock of his death, she also has to contend with the reaction and grief of their 15 year old daughter, and the media frenzy the goes along with a crash of this nature. She learns that the media and the investigators are saying that it was suicide. In an effort to prove to everyone that Jack would never commit suicide as well as murder all those passengers, she learns that her husband had many secrets from her and is not the man she thought he was for all those years together. I could definitely sympathize with Kathryn's situation. She was married to her husband for 16 years and he was living a complete double life. She will never get the answers, never find out why, she simply had to find out and deal with it which is not the easiest thing to do. I was not necessarily thrilled with the ending but I do think that the author captured Kathryn's grief and the tension between her and her fifteen year old. I would definitely recommend the story, it was sad and emotional journey but it was thankfully it went by quickly and remained fairly interesting throughout.

I have always been fascinted with pop culture. As a teenage in the 90's I was always fascinated by Courtney Love. I read this book hoping I would figure out what created her. This book is more about her mother's life than hers, but it is still pretty interesting. It paints a good portrait of what it must have been like to grow up in San Francisco in the 60's. This women lived a crazy life, and seemed to provide the most unstable home to grow up in. Although I think she sees it differently.

I was initially hesitant to jump into this collection of short stories as the first is set in Nix's Old Kingdom. It's been quite some time since I read "Sabriel," "Lirael," and "Abhorsen" and I was nervous that I would not remember enough of the details of those stories to enjoy "Nicholas Sayre and the Creature in the Case" without spending most of the time while reading it trying to remember what/who was being referenced. If that started happening, I would be forced to re-read the entire 1,744 page saga in order to enjoy this book. I do intend to re-read those books someday, but as I'm trying to do 200 books this year, that would really set me back. I was pleased to find that I could quite enjoy the story as Nix provided enough reminders and backstory that I was able to jump right back in. I was also quite enamoured of the other stories in the book. These are an excellent sampling of the Author's work over the years. I would be hard pressed to choose a favorite, and, as with almost no short story collection I have ever read before, I did not dislike any of them. The best thing about the anthology is the author's introductions to each of them. These paragraphs gave insight into both the origin of the story and the writing process of the author himself, information I always find fascinating. I find, also, that it gives the reader a much richer reading experience.
