I had originally read this book when I was in 6th grade and decided to pick it up again because it intrigued me. It was a story of a young, twelve year old girl named Hattie Owen who learned through her uncle the ways of mentally challenged or "special" people. Over the summer, she meets him and is required to take care of him. Although her uncle never spoke much, Hattie learned a lot from his actions and emotions. This book was filled with heart wrenching moments. It was very touching and emotional.

Not quite as engrossing as MY SISTER'S KEEPER, but thoroughly entertaining, and with another notable twist ending. I also must give props to Picoult for her tireless researching! The Amish stuff was intriguing!

I could not get into this book. This is definately not my favorite time period (see review of pride and prejudice). I had a hard time figuring out who was who because every character had 13+ names!! Also, something about the way she writes makes it difficult to read. Not sure what it is, make her word choices? Also, she goes on and on and on about trivial things. During the gambling chapter, I kept waiting for something to happen, and then when it finally did, it took me awhile to realize what had actually happened. At that point I decided I had other books I would rather be reading and put this on my "didn't finish" shelve. Maybe one day, when I have lots of time and an English-French dictionary, and a pen and paper to keep track of all the names of the characters I will try again....

When i read this book, I sort of felt like I was cheating considering I've seen the movie of the same title at least 3 times. While the book and the movie are very similar, the book does contain some alternate images and some details the movie left out. This book was very enjoyable to me because it was like a vactaion for the mind. I often stopped reading in order to create an image in my mind of what I was reading. While i enjoyed the visuals this book illustrated, I often found myself so swept up in the imagery that i couldn't really comprehend the true underlying message of the book. In fact, I'm still unclear about the real message in Big Fish...maybe I'll read it again.

Plot: Liam finds an abandoned baby & suddenly his summer becomes something that he certainly didn't expect!!! likes/ dislikes?: It was really short. Also, I never quite felt that I was really attatched to the characters. Coinsedently, it was altogether rather quite boring.
