Original characters. I liked the dialogue. Entertaining. Things it made me think: -There are prostitutes everywhere and I rarely notice

As far as a mystery, it's a bit predictable (if I can call the ending, then I consider it predictable). As far as meta-, fan-fiction goes, it's a lot of fun.

I can't even remember when the first time I read this book, but trust that it's been several times. This book has unfortunately been reduced to a cliched, trite monster in the 20th century, but the original story is absolutely fascinating. One of the best novels I've read from the 19th century, if not of all time. The Gothic undertones are shadowed by her musings on the power of Man, his relationship with God, and the true sense of loss that Victor feels and isolation the Monster encounters as the book progresses.

Really good story telling. It will make you want to read other books by their author.

I'm a bit torn on this one. The poorly written characters that I could forgive in the first novel become about a thousand times more obnoxious here, especially Murphy but also Harry to a certain extent. They come across as extreme caricatures rather than real people - Murphy is completely irrational in her lack of trust for anyone, and Harry is the chauvinistic, misunderstood white knight. This may seem like a silly complaint in a book about werewolves running around Chicago, but the lack of subtlety in the characters really took some enjoyment out of the book for me. Despite this, I did still enjoy the novel. I don't usually care for werewolf stories, but Butcher keeps it fresh by simply flooding the book with monsters. Did you know that there are at least four kinds of werewolves, and that they all hang out in Chicago? The action moves forward at a fantastic pace, and just like the first book I couldn't put it down. Even with the aforementioned flaws, this is still a fun read.

This is a great book to read if you're considering adopting a parakeet. The author is a biologist and parakeet enthusiast, so you get not only tips on how to take care of your pet, but also information about the birds in the wild. (I didn't realized budgies still lived in the wild in Australia!) If I decide to get another parakeet, I will definitely keep this book around for reference--the author lists typical symptoms and remedies for illnesses and nutritional deficiencies that a pet owner might encounter.

This book has more going for it than I'd originally thought it might. I expected a cute romance between middle-aged people, which it is, but the way in which they recognize and struggle against social constraints has more bite and punch than I would have expected. The conversation the Major has with the vicar on p. 271 is chilling (". . . people get into these relationships -- different backgrounds, different faiths, and so on -- as if it's not a big issue. They want the church's blessing and off they go into the sunset as if everything will be easy") as are the moments when Major Pettigrew realizes that the traditions, people, and way of life he's always loved have become strangers. The truest and best thing in his life is the love he feels for Jasmina Ali, who has plenty of her own and community baggage to handle. Major Pettigrew is cowardly and then brave in a world that isn't as rosy as I might have thought judging by the book's cover.
Remembrance is a perfect little fairy tale in a modern day setting. It was so sweet and romantic, and I couldn't put it down. I am so glad I stumbled upon this lovely book! It makes me wish I had a reincarnated true love. Five stars for sure.
