The story continues with all of the kids living in the FAYZ in two different communities trying to have a close to normal life. Of course things start to break down and old enemies come back which causes a lot of chaos. There is the usual amounts of danger and gruesome descriptions of deaths. Honestly when reading these novels sometimes I forget that the main characters are kids since they now have to deal with so many adult problems. A lot of fears are brought to life in this story and the kids are once again thrown into a world that they aren't prepared for. If you like mutants and action and don't mind frighteningly descriptive scenes, I definitely recommend reading this novel. But you should read the whole series first.

1995 Caldecott Medal Winner This book's illustrations are very different and very cool. The background of each page has a collage of mixed media. On each left hand page there is a picture of some kind of paper in the middle on which the text of the story is printed. On each right hand page, there's what I think is an oil painting. The style is abstract and sort of Picasso-like, but I liked the contrast between the oranges and yellows and the blues and purples. This is a story centering on the Los Angeles Riots of 1992. A boy and his mother make friends with a Korean woman after a firefighter saves their respective cats. I really liked the story because the message seemed natural. It also interested me that I couldn't really tell what ethnicity the characters were supposed to be in the paintings--the only clue was the names that the author used. I wondered if that was the illustrator's contribution to the statement that we shouldn't be divided by race. In addition, the story was an excellent treatment of a subject that could be frightening and confusing for children. It was honest, and I didn't feel like it talked down to the reader at all. It covered the realities of a riot without needing to go into ultraviolent detail. An intriguing and visually compelling treatment of a tough subject.

I really liked this book. It had a good plot and buck was one of the most interesting characters i have ever read about. Lots of people said the ending was really sad. I think it was, but it was bitter sweet because he was able to answer the call of the wild and that made buck happy.

I haven't read much by Patterson but after this book I definitely will. It was interesting from start to finish and I could not put it down. Non stop action and changes to the story. I couldn't wait to see how it all unfolded and there was no way that I could ever have guessed the outcome. A definite read for anyone who likes a fast moving, intriguing story.

This was a very emotional book. I will admit that at times I was almost driven to tears. I sympatized with how the main characters life came crashing down around her when her mother died in the September 11th attacks. Being 13 is tough, I can't imagine what it would have been like to lose my mother at that age.
