Anne Perry is decidedly formulaic. This novel proceeded as planned: we have several possible suspects whose vie as the culprit, the seeds of doubt are sewn about nearly everyone our characters know, and the actual murderer ends up being a crazy person that the characters admired/loved/had affection for. Pretty much the one person that receives the most attention (pages in the book) outside family relations is the culprit. If the person is generally liked, it's all the more likely to be them. I look forward to reading another novel and putting my formula to the test. Formula aside, I still enjoyed the novel. I've grown accustomed to the style of Anne Perry's writing, and that means I can now read her work at a faster pace and enjoy more meaning than before. The author has captured the Victorian era in a bottle and is opening it up for all of us to have a peek. Everything is factual, as it actually was, especially the views and nuances of society at the time. One of the highlighted themes of this novel is the domination of men. We hear multiple characters state that there is a different set of rules for men than for women. It is interesting to see how a society functions with only half of its best thinkers at work. The patriarch is not only the leader of the family, but he is also the only member allowed to have an opinion, or allow others to express theirs. If your opinion is disliked, you are removed from his presence or experience his wrath. If a difficult problem is presented, he and he alone ponders the solution and presents it to the entire family to proceed as dictated to. The whole family is at the mercy of his IQ. The bounds of marriage only count for the fairer sex. Men are allowed to live a dichotomy. They are morally superior to the weaker sex, honorable and strong, except for a gaping weakness in their sexual desires. In that area, they're allowed to go all over town to fulfill that "need;" they not necessarily even be discreet. Let me express my gratitude to forward thinking women who made their voices heard and gave us our society of today! Thank you Women's Lib! Thanks to all those pioneers who fought for the woman's right to vote! This novel makes it clear how blessed we are to live in a time of equality. My final paragraph has spoilers, so don't read any more if you're interested in reading the book. One last note, I find Emily Ellison quite unnerving. She keeps her own secretive counsel and only speaks the truth when it is most hurtful to the ones she loves. She says Charlotte's tongue is irresponsible. Will she ever feel the weight of her words? She inspired the best of sisters to turn to hate and caused the disintegration of her sister's marriage in her final days of her life, all for a small and petty reason and based on a half truth. This highlights a small and shallow teen who I hope can grow into a better formed adult.
