A wonderfully told story about characters who refuse to allow reality to overcome their desires. The one long paragraph approach seems daunting at first (where will I stop reading for the night?), but soon you are pulled into the life of Father Urrutria and his attempts to navigate a very turbulent period of Chilean history. Bolaño handles this character masterfully, never allowing him to slip mindlessly into a pure villain, but also never dismissing his faults. Urrutria is both self-aware and self-decieving. We get the impression that he is aware of the times when his "silences" hurt people, but he also takes great pains to justify them on his death bed. Near the end, when confronted with the reality of a government torture chamber, he claims that he would've spoken out, if he'd only known, but then refuses to go look at it. This is a thought-provoking novel that will stay with you for a long time, despite its short length.

I'd probably go 3.5 :) I really did enjoy this book - the dialogue and storyline were a bit cheesy and overdone at times, but oh how that love story sucks me in and makes me spend my whole Saturday pouring over it! Super light and fun. A nice break from Dickens :) hahaha

A collection of short essays about motherhood. Some are funnier than others, but none are total losers.

This was a fascinating book that I couldn't put down. Parts of the 2nd half I thought were underdeveloped.

I picked this up because the Globe reviewed Pearson's second book and was disappointed because it dulled in comparison to her first. This is her first novel and pretty good. Funny, light reading.
This book got my mind going. I can never stop thinking about it. The story is so sad, but it amazing to see what we can survive through. I thought that there was such a contradiction with that they thought that women were worthless, yet they did so much work. Plus the end of this book when she is making things right with Snow Flower you can really see the importance of woman. I think that some things remain the same for woman especially within the LDS church. Woman have the roles of the housewife and raising of the children while men go outside of the home to work. I am sure that the woman who work outside of the home still agree that they still have to do the majority of the work inside the home as well.
Thoroughly meh. Too much infidelity resulting in too little insight or lessons learned. This book left me with a sense of melancholy and very little else.
