Read this for school and ended up liking it quite a bit. Written in the 50's, it was Okada's only book because he died of a heart attack at 48. A very interesting subject which isn't talked about nearly enough. It deals with the treatment of Japanese and Japanese Americans by our government in WWII. His sentence structure is occasionally very awkward, but other than that, it's good.

I have to say that this is the best book I have read in years. It is written superbly and the storyline is absolutely wonderful. I couldn't get enough of this book and I wish it would have kept going for another thousand pages. I am certainly ready to jump right into another one of his novels immediately. I can't say enough about how much I enjoyed reading this book. It reminds me of how great books can be and why I read in the first place!!!

Brown traces the complicated co-evolution of science and democracy, and the continued conflict between expert advice and popular rule from Machiavelli through Hobbes and Rousseau, the Progressive Movement, Bruno Latour, and to the modern structure of over 35,000 federal science advisors. Brown thesis is opposed to those who want scientists to retreat politically to the role of "an honest broker." Instead, he shows that in our complex, institutionalized system of government, science acts as an "anti-politics", where an appeal to science can trump political concerns. In this environment, where scientific knowledge is so privileged, political actors will perforce learn ways to counter science, by introducing fake "controversies" or attacking the personal credibility of scientists. I believe that we today face major collective challenges, about climate change, peak oil, new diseases, and a host of other issues, and that we cannot simply randomly walk into the future and survive. Expertise will be a vital part of of our future, and if experts are to be credible, they must move out of the marbled halls of power, and appeal directly to the people. Despite it's heavy topic, Science in Democracy is written in a clear and minimally jargon filled style. This is a book that everybody should read.

I really wanted to love this book, but it just didn't live up to the first 4 books, namely the tight plots and humor. While the contrast between 10 year-old Artemis and 14(?) year-old Artemis was jarring, and the time paradox idea was clearly portrayed and interesting, the quick wit and sardonic tone present in the other books was conspicuously lacking. I didn't want to be, but I was disappointed.

Vowell becomes obsessed with presidential assassinations (her writing makes it seem as if it is a quirk, but I am sure the book deal was more of a motivator) and so she journeys to every imaginable place (tourist and otherwise) connected to the history of three of these events (Lincoln, Garfield, McKinnley). She details the history behind each assassination while weaving in bits of social commentary, political critique, and an assessment of American cultural values. And she does so with the sarcastic humor of a well-informed non-expert.

This book is the natural continuation to "Design Patterns". After all design patterns are targets to refactoring, so, once you know where you want to get reach, you need to learn the process to do it safely. This books shows you that and, for me, it has been an inpiration to solve many problems in the design of my programs that I didn´t realize I had and could be wiped out. I have found specially interesting the chapter about simplifying conditional logic. Following Martin's advices I´m getting much more understandable software.

I enjoyed this but not as much as his first novel, I even managed to work out who the murderer was in this one well before the end.
