I am very rarely disappointed with books put out by NYRB publisher. How do they know exactly what I want to read?

Charles Williams to me, in his own words: If it was Love that the old woman was praising now, the shrill voice didn't quite sound like it. But it might be; with the sweet irony of Perfection, one could never tell. It was never what you expected, but always and always incredibly more. ... That sovereign estate, the inalienable heritage of man, had been in her, as in all, falsely mortgaged to the intruding control of her own greedy desires. Even when the true law was discovered, when she knew that she had the right and the power to possess all things, on the one condition that she was herself possessed, even then her freedom to yield herself had been won by many conflicts. ... She attempted dutifully to enjoy and failed, but while she attempted it the true gift was delivered into her hands. ... ...a fanatic in a train who had given her a tract: Love God or go to Hell. It was only after a number of years that she had come to the conclusion that the title was right, except perhaps for go to--since the truth would have been more accurately rendered by be in Hell. She was doubtful also about God; Love would have been sufficient by itself but it was necessary at first to concentrate on something which could be distinguished from all its mortal vessels, and the more one lived with that the more one found that it possessed in fact all the attributes of Deity. She had tried to enjoy, and she remembered vividly the moment when, walking down Kingsway, it had struck her that there was no need for her to try or to enjoy: she had only to be still, and let that recognized Deity itself enjoy, as its omnipotent nature was.
Mme. Rwamotswe is a memorable and spunky character! She lives in a small village in Mozambique and decides to start her own detective agency. She has all kinds of encounters, from finding a lost little boy, to mending relationships, to retrieving a watch from inside a crocodile. It is an easy and fun read! The book is organized as a series of stories about her, and doesn't have one over-arching story, except that all the stories are about her doing detective work, so that might bother some people, because you want to know what happens to everyone at the end! I loved it anyway.

Bloodroot is spellbinding. I loved it. The different narrators didn't bother me; in fact, I enjoyed reading the various viewpoints. That's saying something, because sometimes that sort of thing does bother me. I thought it was really interesting how the character of Myra, who seems so compelling and magnetic (almost magical) when described by the other characters, seems so ordinary when we read her section. I recall one character saying “She’s made out of flesh and blood, just like anybody else.” The story of this family in Appalachia and what they go through over the years is heartbreakingly sad, but it's handled in such a beautiful way by the author. You really feel like you are there in the story; you see the mountain and you can so easily picture the characters. It's emotional without being sappy or maudlin. Unlike some other reviewers, I really liked the ending too. I read this in February so it's still early, but I'm guessing this will end up being one of my favorite books that I read in 2011.

It was hard for me to believe that a boy, Bruno goes from 9 to 11 years in this book, could be so unaware of his situation. Bruno's Father is the commandant at "Out With." The family lives in the shadow of the barbed wire fence of the concentration camp. The book is well written and easy to read. It is a young adult book. However, I just couldn't get over the creditability issue.

Nice knitting stories wove between practical tips and pattern "recipes." Great for the beginning knitter.
I read this about 10 years ago, and i remember it being so amazing. It's a vision Rick Joyner was given, an allegory of spiritual battle. It gave me glimpses of heaven that I will never forget. I'm not saying it's fabulous literature, he's pretty much just writing down what he saw, but there's a lot of wisdom in it. I'm re-reading it now.

The book started out slow. Yet picked up at the end, with a few twists. But one has to read that far. Hopefully my next Deaver book will be better.

I found this a wonderful book that began with the author as a wealthy, obedient wife who took over the Washington Post upon the death of her husband and pushed it and herself to the top tier of journalism excellence. It covers the Pentagon Papers, Watergate and the nearly disastrous Local 6 union conflict along with inside glimpses of Presidential personalities and stumbling blocks along the way. An entertaining look at some recent American history, the book is an easy read and a surprising page-turner for an autobiography. Initially I thought there was too much name-dropping, but the book is a candid, introspective life of a remarkable woman who talks the talk and walked the walk. Excellent book that won a 1998 Pulitzer Prize.
