Particularly liked the story "Rare Bird," about a woman trying to educate herself as a naturalist while struggling against the social rules imposed on Victorian women. The title story is about a young doctor who goes to work at Canada's quarantine island where thousands upon thousands emigrants fleeing the Irish Potato Famine arrived bringing a typhus epidemic with them. Grim and inspiring.

I read this for my book club at school thought it was kinda elementary level (not that that's bad) but I'm 14 so it just didn't fit quite right with me. I wished there was more romance between Esperanza and Miguel, they barely even held hands!! Overall a pretty good read, I would say fourth grade and up.

I just want to start by saying how much I loved Dev in this book. He was constantly making me laugh from the very beginning to the very end. Even though it was sad, I liked that we saw some of his past. That past made me care for him even more. He is truly a beautiful man. The part we got to see about his brothers (two of the quads) Remi and Quinn/ love triangle was brutal, and makes us understand a little more why Remi is the way he is, and the situation he struggles with every single day. Samia is a great heroine. Her past was very hard to read about. The betrayel of her sister (that lead to her death), must be unbearable to live with. Yet she handles it as best she can, and she tries to live her life to the full. She also got pretty screwed over by Artemis, the powers she recieved (by becoming a Dark Hunter) are really shitty and most of the time make her life impossible, but she deals with it, and she doesn't moan or bitch about it. Her being an Amazonian warrior was impressive and I can deffinately see why she is a 'Dog of War'. She can kick serious ass! Her and Dev together are a perfect match. I was happy to see that Aimee and Fang are doing well re-building Sanctuary and that Savitar has seen sense and reinstated their license. Which we knew he already felt guilty about. He also shows some incredible powers and gives out a few 'gifts'. I felt really sorry for all the guilt that Fang now carries on his shoulders. I hope that one day (soon) Fang will be able to let go of that guilt over a situation he had no control over. He's an amazing guy! I would have given this book 5 stars instead of 4, if not for the whole 'get the girdle' story. I just didn't see why it was neccesary. Plus it took me further and further away from more Dev and Samia time, which I was dying for. A massive OMG moment at seeing Amaranda and Cael. AND they're now also working for Thorn. Who'd have thought! Hope to see more of them soon. Bar the Girdle thing, this book was incredible.

This is a very funny, very wrong, well character-developed series. Heavy on the anti-hero. And definitely not for everyone.

Maybe good for a lapsit storytime with a boy, but I'm always thinking in storytime mode and this story does nothing for me. Sometimes I use wordless books for "What do you think will happen next?" but that doesn't really work for this one, because the answer is "the truck keeps driving" after every page. By all means, however, good for boys to look at and learn the text on the illustrations on their own time.

It filled in alot of details. It seemed to drag a bit while they were wandering around looking for the Horcruxes. I was shocked that so many people lived. I cried the hardest when Hedwig died.
