I found it hard to get through this one, for some reason.

I was unimpressed, to put it simply. Nothing happened throughout the entire book. The writing was nice but it was just like reading about interconnected boring, normal lives. I'm probably too young to appreciate the beauty of this.

More dark-eyed young women (to whit, read Rhys) fail to outrun ruin across cosmopolitan interwar Europe. There is something psychologically compelling about the autobiographical repetitiveness of her subject matter...

For me, this book is essential feminism lit. Sonia Johnson tells about her journey, from being banned from the Mormon Church to the struggle of women to get the Equal Rights Amendment ratified. I found this book enlightening and I think every woman should read it.

not his best, but worth a read. its somewhat violent, but sort of pulpy.
A smooth, slow, sad novel of forgiveness and how 'moment' decisions can ruin your life forever. I read this novel in about 2 1/2 hours it was that good. From back cover: "Daniel Fielding, a quiet, middle-aged editor at a Toronto publishing house, has it all: an attractive wife, a charming daughter who excels at her private school, and a desirable house in a nice neighbourhood. But when Fielding and a pretty, assertive young colleague travel together to the Frankfurt Book Fair, what begins as an indiscretion unexpectedly explodes into violence. Now Fielding must navigate the devastation of the lives left behind. Adultery is a subtle, powerful story of a man's fall from grace and his search for forgiveness, even in the unlikeliest of places."

A tour de force of history and imagination. Riveting and beautiful, and a great joy to read.

This was more a 'contemporary' romance novel without the laid on thick romantic crap that most romances are made of. Well written, heart-warming, funny and made me feel like I myself had visited 'The Lone Star Cafe'. I'll be looking for more of this author's novels. From back cover: "Laura Draper is having the worst day of her life. By noon, her career as a magazine editor, her relationship with a well-known photojournalist, and her very sanity are all in doubt. She finds herself marooned at a crossroads in Nowhere, Texas, wondering which way to turn. What's a girl to do? Certainly not allow herself to be lured into the ramshackle Lone Star Cafe run by two crazy old ladies who claim their coffee has mystical secret ingredients. Definitely not return again and again. And under no circumstances fall for the laid-back moves, twinkling eyes, and slow grins of guitar-picking local guy Graham Keeton. But Laura can't help herself. Suddenly her uptight professionalism is out the window. She's landing in the most amazing, undignified, hilarious situations with Graham, and she likes it. What in the world is happening to her? Where is she heading, and why does it feel as if she's finally come home?"
