This is a fascinating study of four thinkers (plus a few more) in the late nineteenth century that all ended up somewhere around a thought or philosophy called "pragmatism." Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr., Charles Pierce, William James, and John Dewey, all from different professional fields, shared similar thoughts on beliefs, thoughts, and ideas. Pierce, unlike the others, didn't share the idea that thoughts and actions amounted to the same thing, ultimately. The three others believed in the utility of beliefs as disconnected from a "reality" outside of a person's perception and mind. I don't want to recount the whole idea here but I will say, in short, that it's a fascinating read. I am not well versed in philosophy at all and now I am interested more and more in the subject. Another interesting note is that Louis Menand seems to make Darwin the lynch pin of the whole book, in a way. for thinkers in that time, you were either per-Darwinian or a Darwinian thinker.

Wow, the 1970s were terrible. Everyone was having threesomes and traveling on the astral plane and cruising around the world looking to telepathic potentials. Not much happens in this book until the last 40 pages. And even then it is really just a chase of really sleepy people to defeat a vampire that just needs its named called. Seriously. What the heck people? What the heck. With characters named Wallet, Sun Girl, Joker and Dr. Orient, I guess I should not have expected anything at all from this. Still. I made it to the end. That has to count for something. Right?

book 3 of the young adult sci-fi 'chaos walking' trilogy has a fantastic transparent overlayed jacket/cover design (similar to the first two books i guess, but this is the best of them i think). and once again the typography throughout the book is intelligently handled and plays an even larger role in comprehending the story than it did previously. it's a very powerful and intense book dealing with the ambiguities, complexities & horrors of war—all in the context of well-developed characters. my disappointment with it (the same as i had with book 2) is that i think it loses itself somewhat in its depth and intensity and again doesn't build on the wonder and discovery shown in the first book. nevertheless i think patrick ness deserves all the awards he's received for this series. it's an important work that skilfully addresses some very timely themes for the world we live in.

Reading this on the bus was awesome fun times. Nieratko reads like the illegitimate child of Allan Ginsberg and Georges Bataille- dirty, sexy, weird and funny. I'll bet his wife is a peach of a lady.

I had this book hanging around my house for ages until one day I finally decided to read it (I admit I had nothing better to do). So I must say the story is good. Like most of the previous comment will agree with me- the whole basic outline might not be the most original (vampires, werewolfs, yeah, we know) but the perspective of surnatural creatures described through Cassandra Clare's pen is highly interesting. It took a while before I really got into the story- I didn't really like the beginning, but also I don't see how the author could have introduced her characters otherwise, and because I wouldn't have done any better i won't criticize- but I will suggest that future readers of this book should wait until page 200 before giving up. SPOILER ALERT : Now for those who read the book- that incest thing at the end??? I liked Jace and Clary so much! Their twisted mind-game relationship was so interesting! I couldn't wait to read the final outcome... I was so angry to see the love story blown apart. Ugh, these endings make me want to burn the book. I have to give the author some credit though- it was an original move that I wasn't expecting at all, even though it did frustrate me (as childish as it sounds). So I won't be reading the rest of them, because I think the ending seriously pissed me off, but it was not a bad story.
