i read this book after i read the wind-up bird chronicle and honestly, i don't think it can even compare. it was good. the chapters worked together like a see-saw. i got lost in them. but it all came together in the end and that's how i like it. good read.

I have a fairly old edition. There is no copyright date, but it is a British publication with some beautiful illustrations by Richardson. I'm guessing it's from the 1910-1930's. I don't list this as on the "Books to Movies" shelf, but I almost want to after watching Stanley Kubrick & Steven Spielberg's movie "A.I." It is a modern retelling of "Pinnochio" in a future setting, and it is a beautiful movie.
It took my a long time to read this book. It's long (992 pages in the paperback edition, not including notes, acknowledgments and so forth), and I'm a slow reader. And I kept getting interrupted by annoying things, such as work. But I always looked forward to picking it up. I think what makes it such a vibrant biography is the astonishing use of little details. Did it have to be quite so long? I don't think so. As fascinating as the 1948 election was, the section about it became repetitive. I think less space could have been devoted to writing about Truman writing his memoirs. David McCullough obviously admired Truman, and it's hard to come away from reading this book without also admiring Truman. The 33rd president, as depicted by McCullough, certainly doesn't fit the cartoonish image that I've had in the past. What comes across more than anything is that he was a thoroughly decent man, kind to just about everyone and particularly those who worked for him, and that the presidency didn't change those qualities. His admirable loyalty to friends probably was a fault at times. But I don't know that I would have voted for him if I had been around to vote in 1948. Some of the main themes of his campaign are themes that make me suspicious when I hear politicians say them. He claimed that he was the candidate of "the people." Where do the other candidates get their votes from, amphibians? He said that if voters acted on their own self-interest, they would vote for him. While I won't deny that self-interest is a factor in voting, I'd like to think that a presidential election calls voters to causes that are greater than mere self-interest. Nonetheless, it seems to me that the country was in pretty good hands with Truman as its president.

I read this book YEARS ago. I just had to put it on my list because I loved it. I plan on reading it again to see if it's still as great as I remember.

It was a very interesting book with a unique perspective (the voice from a five year old). The fact that it was written from the viewpoint of a child made the topic bearable but I found myself skipping through many passages as they were dragging. I think that this would have been better as a short story.

Decided it was high time I read this whole Narnia series to see what all the commotion was about. I found the first book really entertaining (especially with all the symbolism behind it - its really quite good), and liked how it explained a lot of things that happened in The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, which I had read when I was younger. I'm looking forward to the rest of the series.

I laughed out loud several times while reading this book. I'd rate it higher but the author is mistaken if he thinks that any of the readers care about anything not actually about the dog (for example, his marriage). And I didn't even finish reading the self-indulgent epilogue about writing about the dog and how much the public loves to read about his dog.
This book is a really easy read, and it's not an astounding piece of literature, but I LOVED it because it's about a girl who quits her boring job and opens up a little book shop...my dream!!! Oh, and she also meets some hot guy that helps her along the way.
