Cute illustrations. The story is more of a veiled political cartoon.

I think this is unspoken obligatory reading for anyone in their early 20's.

Sadly this is a book I can truly say I was thankful to finish. I enjoyed several parts of this book but for me it could have been condensed to about 25 pages. I had trouble chronologically placing events in order. Also I felt that the book was purely about 3 things, rap and it's NYC origins, hustling as his story to tell through his art, and the other artists that inspired him. I would have enjoyed reading more insight into his business success and failure, personal relationships, etc. This would not be a book I would recommend to anyone except a diehard rap or jay-z fan. I found fascinating: the Cristal story, the clothing line start up, bootlegging, and the story of filming of big pimping. Enjoyed "decoding" the first few songs, but definitely lost the fun of the exercise after a while.

I'm not quite sure how I feel about wilde. he was a part of the aesthetic movement, but this play is a satire. Hypocritical?

This book turned out to be different then I had thought it would. When I first heard about this book, I had thought it would be about the fictional Alice, from Alice in Wonderland, and provide a sort of alternative version of the story. But as it turns out it was about the historical Alice, the real girl who inspired by the Alice in Wonderland story. While this book did not have the fantastic elements which I had thought it would, it still had its own whimsy and charm and was quite an enjoyable read. As well it was quite interesting for as much as I love Alice in Wonderland, I did not know much of the background. The story is very endearing and at times heart wrenching. One of the things I found interesting is the author's approach to view the story of revealing the tragic lives of child stars, something that is even more prominent today with TV and Movies, and kind of interesting that we never really think much of the fate of children who were literary icons prior to the invention of TV. The other thing I quite enjoyed about the story is that I could see certain parallels between the people Alice really knew and some of the characters of Alice in Wonderland. Mr. Dodgson (aka Lewis Carol) I saw as being the White Rabbit, either Pricks or Alice's mother I saw as possibly being the Queen of Hearts, Mr. Ruskin made me think of the Mad Hatter, and Mr. Ducksworth seemed a bit like Tweedle Dee/Tweedle Dum. The one thing which puzzled me, and perhaps I will have to go looking into it some more, is that I had always heard that Lewis Carol (Mr. Dodgson) was inspired by his niece to writer Alice in Wonderland, but according to Melanie Benjamin, Mr. Dodgson was a neighbor and friend of the family of no blood relation.

Just finished reading MY BEATING TEENAGE HEART by C.K. Kelly Martin. Wow. It's a powerful book about grief within the hearts of the dead and the living and how the two might intertwine. It's intense in its depiction of the sheer pain of loss so often made worse by hopelessness and isolation-- a reminder that there are times when our only hope is the faith of those who care about us. Beautiful.
It got better the further I read. I didn't think I would make it through when I first started reading, but after getting half way through I started enjoying the mystery.

I liked the concept of this book, featuring writing by those over 50 and thier perspective, but just couldn't get into it.
This book was awesome! A lot of twists and turns but a fantastic read. It will keep you guessing, and the end is a shocker (for me it was at least.) I think I might read it again at some point to catch some of the clues I might have missed.

Even though this is classified as a children's book here -- and even though Rumer Godden is primarily known as a children's author (I don't know how popular she is in the States but Celeste had read her) -- I think this is actually a book *about* children that isn't intended *for* children. Not that there's anything racy in it, but it's much, much more subtle than her children's books (which I also love). Some people might find this a bit saccharine, but if you want to read a beautifully written but still very uplifting (eek -- I don't usually use that word!) novel peopled by very real children, here it is.
