the book was good. to sad:all my favorite characters died! i liked it though.
This was so cute, fun and original! I loved Despereaux and the different point of views all through it. The way it tied up the ends at the end was so original, and it was great the way the author spoke right to you.

Since my birthday is the same as Abraham Lincoln's, I've always been in awe of him. This non-fiction book, written for elementary students, appealed to me and will to all Lincoln buffs. It not only shows significant photography of Lincoln's day and his life, but provides snapshots into his personality and strengths. This is a quick and interesting read. Submitted by Kathy CLICK HERE to find "Lincoln Through the Lens: How Photography Revaled and Shaped an Extraordinary Life" in Bismarck Public Library's online catalog.
I listed to the book on tape. Lovely mix of "how you can die in the woods" information, information on the woefully underfunded park service and the history of the Appalachian Trail, and one man's journey on the Appalachian trail (in his 40's, out of shape, with a friend who is a challenge but a good guy in the end). Made me want to hike the trail in pieces when the kids are older!

The theme, the lacuna, was wonderfully woven through out the book. I was introduced to history I never learned in high school. Thank you Barbara Kingsolver
This is Karen Witemeyer’s third novel and each one just gets better and better. The message in this deeply moving story is that God gives us second chances. This is a historical romance that will wheedle its way into your heart and soul. Levi Grant has spent time in jail for a crime he didn’t mean to do, it was totally unintentional. He is now looking to begin his life anew in Spencer, Texas where a blacksmith is needed and Levi fits the bill. Eden Spencer is a librarian in Spencer who is somewhat cantankerous but she absolutely loves children but has sworn off men. But, when Levi arrives in town Eden’s perfectly, orderly life is quickly turned upside down. Eden isn’t big on forgiveness and must learn through God that she needs to trust that God will direct her down the right path. Meanwhile, Levi has made a promise to God which he plans to uphold and soon both Eden and Levi are growing closer to each other. However, they must reveal and reconcile the differences in their pasts. Levi doesn’t know that he will soon face an evil man with evil intentions and the outcome of that will surprise you. There are so many life affirming messages to find throughout this story which will be reminders to us all that all things are possible through God if we allow Him. I would highly recommend this beautifully written Christian novel to anyone. I’m looking forward to reading Ms. Witemeyer’s next novel. “Book has been provided courtesy of Baker Publishing Group and Graf-Martin Communications, Inc. I read this because it's on the 2011 Man Booker Prize longlist.... The novel is the confession of a British lawyer's experience working in Moscow who was scammed by two fetching young women. As I read his narrative of his self-deluded involvement in a serious criminal conspiracies, I kept mentally shouting "Wake up, you fool! Don't get sucked into these schemes!" This quotation from Snowdrops sums up the book's cynical depiction of modern Russia: "In Russia there are no politics stories. And there are no politics stories. There are no love stories. There are only crime stories." Snowdrops reminds me a bit of LeCarre's recent novel, Our Kind of Traitor, which I liked more because the characters and places are developed more completely. In both novels, the innocent victims are the characters who stay with me.

As you perhaps can see from the cover image, this book has been called "Ocean's Eleven meets Harry Potter". I don't disagree much with that assessment, and it is certainly a good description of the basics of the story for anyone not well versed in the genre. But I would rather describe it as Neil Gaiman's Books of Magic meets Las Vegas meets [good] Hollywood Action-Thriller. At first this seems to be a pretty standard story of two friends going to break the bank in Vegas, with the only added ingredient being the use of real magic. But it doesn't take long before you realize this novel is much more than that. Forbeck quickly pulls you into the story, I was hooked by the end of the first chapter. It doesn't take long before you realize there is quite a complex back story here, and it is one that is revealed over the course of the novel. Something that works very well. You always feel that there is more to be revealed, and that makes this a book that is hard to put down once you have started it. It is a fast-paced story, there is lots of action and that is why I used Hollywood action-thriller as a description at the beginning of this review. But it doesn't feel like the action is placed there just to "up the ante", it is an integral part of the whole. Another strength of this novel is that Forbeck is very good at adding that little magical twist to our world that signifies good Urban Fantasy. Everything is slightly different from the reality we know, but never so much that it becomes too implausible. A couple of the revelations were of the kind that made perfect sense, and I actually wouldn't be too surprised if it really was the way Forbeck tells it in this book. The characters in this book are interesting, especially the main character. And even those that same pretty typical have something fresh about them. I enjoyed following Jackson and Bill's journey through this version of Vegas, and I wouldn't mind following them to other places in the future. Overall this is a fresh and suspenseful Urban Fantasy novel. It is great entertainment, and if you have a taste for fantasy in a contemporary setting this is definitely worth checking out. This will also make a great read for anyone interested in stage-magic, Las Vegas, and casino card games. Review originally published on my blog: http://weirdmage.blogspot.com
