The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins follows the story of a girl name Katniss. It takes place in a future where the world has changed dramatically. As a result of wars that have taken place, the Capitol institutes a yearly event, called The Hunger Games, to remind the people of their past and to make sure it will never happen again. These games are central to the entire story for the main character, as the reader follows her through the emotions and turmoil she experiences. The Good: The storytelling in The Hunger Games is top-notch. I found myself swiftly enthralled with the world the author created. I cared about the characters. I felt the pain and agony of the games. This is a very well written book. The author tells the story from the first-person perspective by the main character, Katniss. Throughout the entirety of the book, you come to know the character very well – as the author describes her feelings with a lot of detail. Many times I found myself caught up in the character’s thoughts to the point that I forgot it I was even reading it in the first-person perspective. There’s no doubt about it that this is an enjoyable book to read. The Bad: Being unfamiliar with the Young Adult genre of books, my gripe on The Bad might be something that is inherent with similar books. Throughout the book, the character tends to repeat many of her thoughts and feelings. The author mentions the past regularly, and that past being referred to often is the same thing over in over. This is a minor annoyance, but it is there nonetheless. Fortunately, it doesn’t taint the overall story. Which leads me to the most ironic thing about this book… The Ugly: I’m not sure if this was the author’s intent, but the one thing I absolutely did not like about The Hunger Games was The Hunger Games. The reasoning behind why The Hunger Games – a brutal match of young children where they all fight to the death and there is one winner, all of this televised for the population to see and for some reason enjoy – is unbelievable. I cannot see in any society tolerating something like this. I do not understand why people would accept it. The whole basis for this book feels so completely implausible that I found myself totally distracted by it while reading the entire book. In the end, I really liked The Hunger Games. Despite the impossible premise, the story the author tells is very good. I’ve never read a book that made me feel so conflicted, and I guess that is a good thing. The fact that I like it so much in one respect and hate it in another is a testament to what the author wrote. Intentional or not, the book strikes a chord in some form and makes you think. I highly suggest you give this one a read.

I'm actually giving this book 4.5 stars. I LOVED it, but oddly, it was a book that I was "able to put down". Not that it took me long to read, nor was it difficult to get through, but I didn't read it all in one sitting. So about the book... truly beautiful. I've never been so impressed with an authors ability to paint with words. Without being difficult to read (ahem... Dickens), Enger's use of the English language was truly artistic. The characters were perfectly good and perfectly flawed. The miracles throughout the book were uplifting. The ending was just as it should have been, despite an awful loss to the family. I like to think it was wrapped up nicely, just without the pretty bow. Overall, this is a book that I want to own, but it will be a while before I read it again. It was so so good, and yes, you should read it too!

One of the best mixture of science fiction and humor that I've ever encountered. The acknowledgement thanks 4 people "who helped the author avoid many errors and grotesqueries," and goes on to say "Those that remain in the book are the ones he just couldn't resist." That sums up the attitude of the book perfectly. The storyline itself - a Hollywood funded human mission to Mars - is scarily close to home in many ways.

L'astronauta Ijon Tichy viene invitato ad un congresso di futurologia presso uno stato del centro America, la Costaricana, che ricorda alquanto lo stato libero di Bananas di Woody Allen. L'alloggio consiste in un hotel dalle dimensioni inconcepibili ed il congresso verte sulle questioni che affliggono l'umanità in sovrannumero su un pianeta dalle capacità pur sempre finite. La Costaricana è afflitta da una guerra civile ed i lavori del congresso sono funestati dall'attacco americano durante il quale Tichy viene prelevato da quest'ultimi ed ibernato, per svegliarsi diversi decenni dopo in un mondo estremamente mutato. Diversamente dalla fantascienza più comune, la scienza non ha prodotto invenzioni tecnologiche legate all'informatica, quali computer o robot estremamente evoluti, ma ha virato verso la modificazione della percezione che l'uomo ha del mondo. Questo grazie all'incredibile quantità di farmaci dagli effetti più disparati che possono anche far avere allucinazioni di qualsiasi tipo e per qualsiasi durata di tempo; si parla infatti di farmacocrazia, chimicocrazia o qualsiasi altro neologisma che vi possa venire in mente :). Ad aprire gli occhi di Tichy sul mondo che lo circonda è il suo vecchio mentore, il professore Trottelreiner, anch'egli ibernato e risvegliatosi in questa nuova realtà, dove si è appassionato di una nuova "materia umanistica", consistente nel creare un nuovo linguaggio che prenda il posto della lingua precedente. Non vedete un'analogia con "1984" di Orwell? In questo modo si vuole creare una rottura col passato e rendere più facile l'accettazione delle novità. L'ho trovato un racconto di fantascienza atipico e per certi versi un'allegoria della nostra società. L'ultimo episodio che coinvolge Tichy e Trottelreiner è davvero forte ed angosciante, anche se il finale, non troppo convincente, mitiga il tutto lasciando al lettore trarre le conclusioni su cosa sia stato reale o meno della storia narrata. this is an alright book. but don't read it looking for the same humor, wit, intelligence, depth or character building as gone with the wind. it's hard to go from a masterpiece of epic proportions to a follow up novel, so let's not compare them. lets just say, if you want to read one person's interpretation of what could have happened, go for it, it is not a deep read. as far as actual writing and storytelling goes, the ending is severely lacking. it seems as if ripley was under a time crunch and just needed to end it, regardless of the loose ends that needed to be tied up or the lack of character consistencies displayed.
