In one sense this is an interesting take on the Dracula legend. What makes this book more intriguing, though, is the way in which the story is told. It is structured, aptly, as an historian's investigation. Much of the novel consists of notes, letters, the accounts of various characters, and findings from old books. The various pieces are intricately connected, and the architecture of the novel is admirable. My major quibble is that the voices in which the various sources are supposedly written/told all sound pretty much the same. There are a couple of exceptions - an academic paper and a series of postcards - for which the media effectively push Kostova into a different writing style. But most of the accounts are clearly written by the same person. More than the literary nicety that better characterization through writing style would have been, it would also make the novel easier to read. There are at least three time lines interwoven over the course of the story, and keeping track of what happened to who when can be a bit challenging. I think that would have been easier if it were clearer who's part of the story you were reading at any given time. p.s. The "handfeel" of this edition is wonderful. The paper stock is thin (important for 700 pages) and smooth, and the binding is nicely flexible, so it falls open to whatever page you happen to be reading.
