Excellent introduction by Louise Gluck which refutes bogus distinctions between personal and political poetry. Some wonderful poems in here. I like the trajectory between Western and Arab lyric, and the phrase 'I am the distance from birds to Jerusalem'. Favourite poems: 'Sleeping Trees', 'The Idea of Return', 'Love Poem', 'Landscape', 'Moon Grass Rain', 'The Onion Poem', 'Image', 'Bird Banner'.

Wasn't at all crazy about this book. I have the first 5 books in this series but I never managed to make it past this one.

The Foundation Trilogy lived up to expectations... almost. I had a great time traveling simultaneously backward and forward in time with Issac Asimov. He was writing a series of novels about an advanced spacefaring culture, but he was writing before the advent of computers. His visions are simultaneously quaint and awe-inspiring. The version of the trilogy that I read is old. It was bizarrely filled with grammatical errors, especially in punctuation. I'm trying to decide if this was the author's choice, or if it was just shoddy editing.

In one sense this is an interesting take on the Dracula legend. What makes this book more intriguing, though, is the way in which the story is told. It is structured, aptly, as an historian's investigation. Much of the novel consists of notes, letters, the accounts of various characters, and findings from old books. The various pieces are intricately connected, and the architecture of the novel is admirable. My major quibble is that the voices in which the various sources are supposedly written/told all sound pretty much the same. There are a couple of exceptions - an academic paper and a series of postcards - for which the media effectively push Kostova into a different writing style. But most of the accounts are clearly written by the same person. More than the literary nicety that better characterization through writing style would have been, it would also make the novel easier to read. There are at least three time lines interwoven over the course of the story, and keeping track of what happened to who when can be a bit challenging. I think that would have been easier if it were clearer who's part of the story you were reading at any given time. p.s. The "handfeel" of this edition is wonderful. The paper stock is thin (important for 700 pages) and smooth, and the binding is nicely flexible, so it falls open to whatever page you happen to be reading.

You know, I picked up a collection of Gaitskill stories sometime after I finished Two Girls Fat and Thin, and I think the best synopsis I can give to Because They Wanted To is that I can't actually remember if this is the one I read. After a while, frankly, despite the author's excellent turns of phrase and her bewitching way with the dark powers of language, a new Gaitskill story starts sounding very much like the last Gaitskill story you read, which itself bore a striking resemblance to that other collection you put down because you were bored with the anonymous violence and sex scenes. I remember reading this (or maybe the other collection of stories), and thinking most of the reading experience was déjà vu. And that is a shame, because Gaitskill is a fine writer, really.

interesting but a little disturbing. you also have to tolerate the author stroking his own ego throughout the book. other than that, it was pretty good.
