The Masses was a revolutionary magazine/newspaper. It was radical in every way, from its writing and art to its politics. Practically every important artist or writer who was living in the U.S. at the time wrote for The Masses, from writers like John Reed, Max Eastman, Sherwood Anderson, and artists like John Sloan, Picasso, Arthur Davies, George Bellows, and Stuart Davis. I wish someone would republish a collected volume of The Masses because the publication is STILL one of the best ever printed. It looks oddly like The New Yorker with endless cartoons on the side with bylines, and it is a definite precursor to The Village Voice, but it's more interesting and more attractive than either of those magazines. As the quote above says, "They aimed to "conciliate nobody, not even our readers."

I know. It's obvious coming from me. But it's my favorite story.

I enjoyed the book but somehow think the author is totally overhyped. What made the story so fascinating was the subject and what he endured. Nicely written and researched, but she is no David Mccullough.

I have such mixed emotions about this book. I loved the first part, the second part was "ok"....but of course I had to finish it to see how it all played out! The first part is just a thriller! The author is brilliant. I would recommend it....

Steeped in the history of early America settlement of Montana and the persecution of Germans during World War II, Larson delivers a riveting story. An often dense read, this intellectual book does not shy away from ecumenical, theological, historical, or philosophical digressions. However, the murder mystery propels the plot forward, as does the real-time narration (Adso narrates the book in seven days, marking chapters according to the daily monastic schedule). The chapter descriptions lend an academic feel to the novel and the decision to break chapters by time of day rather than action not only pulls the reader into the world of the abbey, but also makes the reader's progress easy to note. Eco is quite frankly a genius and I sometimes wished I read the book along with one of the companion guides - at the very least to translate the Latin, Greek, and sometimes even German quotations, but also to explain the historical background. With the caveat that this is not a book to be taken lightly, however, I was absolutely enthralled by it. The Sean Connery movie adaptation, which I watched a celebration for finishing the book, is one of those adaptations that make unexpected changes to the plot line that you were not entirely sure was necessary, but at the same time could understand Hollywood's motivations. Absolutely read the book first.

Another YA book with a "food-themed cover." This story of donuts, faith and friendship was sprinkled with issues that arise when those who worship money use fundamentalism to achieve their goals.
I liked this one. A bit different from the usual police procedural versus jerky reporter. Jerky reporter turns out not to be jerky and the killers does some creepy stuff with Edgar Allan Poe. A good read.

I kind of felt like this book would never end. Part III was engaging, but by that point I was so sick of Tally, I didn't even care. Both Pretties and Specials had the same story arc as Uglies: Tally is ignorant of the world, she does something wrong, she sees the error of her ways, she gets smarter. The sad part is that I truly love the world in which the trilogy is set, the philosophy behind the dystopia. Unfortunately, it was painfully too long; I think it would have been better as one book, with all the repeated drama eliminated. I had more of a sense of relief from finishing the book than any sort of satisfaction. I think I'll be taking a break before I read Extras.

Maybe a bit slow in the beginning, but it gets better and better, and especially towards the end I found it deeply moving. Nice to "meet" Elling again - at least I am pretty sure it's him!
